QUICK KEYS IN ELEMENTS MASTERING PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS WITH KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS

KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS Keyboard shortcuts are key commands assigned to tools and tasks. Summon a tool or task with a single keystroke instead of hunting and pecking through menus. •

Why? •

Save time: Using keyboard shortcuts allows quick work.

Memorizing shortcuts makes Photoshop more accessible. Even if you only memorize the most commonly used tools, you can increase your productivity significantly.

TIP •

Press the same key command again to toggle through related tools.

Hover your mouse over a menu to learn its shortcut. Look for shortcuts in the menu bars as well.

A NOTE ON F-KEYS FOR MAC If you press an F-Key and it invokes your computer commands instead of Photoshop Elements commands, you may need to adjust your system settings to allow PSE to use the F-Keys. For example, if you press F6 and it adjusts your monitor brightness instead of bringing up the Styles menu, then PSE needs permission to override the system F-key settings. Here is a tutorial on how to do that. Some users find that holding in the FN key when pressing the F-Key can also work. MAC: Function Keys Don’t Work in Adobe Applications | Mac OS

FAQS •

Can I create my own hotkeys or remap keystrokes in Photoshop Elements? •

Unfortunately, no. The full version of Photoshop allows that feature, but Elements does not.

This is so overwhelming? How should I start? •

Read through the key commands and pick out about 5 things you do all the time. Write them down and practice using them. Once they make their way into your muscle memory, pick 5 more. Key commands are tools; use them only if they work for you!
