2017 PURPLE ACES SOFTBALL HEAD COACH MAT MUNDELL - THIRD SEASON In one of the nation’s top turnarounds, Mat Mundell led the Purple Aces to a 16-win increase in 2016 on his way to his staff being named the Missouri Valley Coaching Staff of the Year. Highlighting the season was a streak in April that saw the program win four consecutive conference series, including wins against eventual league champion Wichita State. Under his direction, Morgan Florey earned MVC Freshman of the Year honors and was named to the All-Conference First Team. Chandra Parr also earned a spot on the squad while Susan Norris was named to the MVC All-Defensive squad. The all-time winningest softball coach in University of Illinois Springfield history took the helm of the Purple Aces in 2014. Faced with difficult odds in his inaugural campaign at UE, Mundell did an admirable job with his squad. His work with Danielle Freeman resulted in her being named an All-MVC player in softball after doing the same in swimming. His work with first baseman Morgan Lambert resulted in her being named to the All-Defensive Team. After assuming the position of Head Softball Coach at UIS in 2009, Mundell experienced unparalleled success. Guiding the program through a period of transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II, Mundell guided the Prairie Stars to over 100 wins while recruiting and coaching 15 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Academic All-Americans and 24 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Academic All-Conference players. In 2014, Mundell coached sophomore pitcher Alex Smith, an All-GLVC second team selection who broke the school record for single-season wins and total strikeouts. The 2013 squad broke the school record for batting average (.277) and walks (142) while breaking the mark of total strikeouts (245) and a program-low 2.94 ERA. Prior to that, the 2012 campaign was a milestone one for Mundell and the Prairie Stars. UIS won a school record 36 games while taking the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division championship. The program made its first NCAA Division II Tournament appearance, which was the first for any sport in school history. The Prairie Stars, who also reached the GLVC Tournament and the NCAA Midwest Regional championship games, boasted four all-conference performers and two all-region players. Under the tutelage of Mundell, the Prairie Stars excelled in the classroom, earning a team grade-point average of at least a 3.20 every season, including a program-best 3.43 GPA in 2014 to earn its first-ever GLVC team academic award. A student-athlete himself, Mundell was a 3-year Varsity tennis player at Eureka College. He graduated with Bachelor’s degree in 2003. Mundell also studied education in his time at UIS. Mat is married to Kelly Mundell and the couple has a daughter Marlee.

2017 PURPLE ACES SOFTBALL SETTING THE SCENE: After one of the top ten turnarounds in the NCAA in 2016, the Purple Aces are poised for more in 2017. UE returns 18 players from last year and welcome five newcomers to this year’s squad. Just two players from last season are no longer with the team as Amanda Blankenship graduated and Danielle Freeman returned to the women’s swim team at UE. TOP COMPETITION: In non-conference play this season, UE will face three of the top six teams in the preseason poll. The Aces open the season in a tournament at #2 Auburn and travel to #1 Oklahoma in early March. In the final weekend of non-conference play, UE will face preseason #6 Michigan in a tournament hosted by the University of Kentucky. PRESEASON POLL: Evansville was picked sixth in the Preseason Missouri Valley Conference Poll. The Aces received 53 points, just one behind 5th-place Illinois State. Sophomore Morgan Florey was chosen to the Preseason All-Conference Team. EARLY RECOGNITION: The reigning MVC Freshman of the Year earned recognition from Fastpitch News (FPN) as she appeared on their list of the top 50 pitchers in the NCAA. Florey was ranked 33rd on the list. GREAT HONOR: Mat Mundell and assistants Ashley Balazs & Aubrey Watson were the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Coaching Staff of the Year. The trio turned around a team that went 10-45 and 2-23 in conference play in 2015 into a true league contender as the squad was 24-26 overall and 12-14 in conference play in 2016. The primary improvements have come on defense as the staff ERA went from 6.61 last year to 2.90 in 2016, which was third in the MVC. Defense also improved its fielding from .937 to .954. It was the first Coach of the Year honor for the program since Rita Schulz and Dee Stevens were honored by the North Star Conference in 1985. FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Morgan Florey was named the 2016 MVC Freshman of the Year. In her first season with the Purple Aces, Florey was one of the top pitchers in the conference and also one of the top freshmen hurlers in the nation. Florey finished second in the MVC with 214 strikeouts, a tally that was just three away from breaking the UE single-season mark of 216. Her ERA of 1.95 was third in the league while the four saves she earned tied the single-season mark for the Aces. On offense, Florey batted .297 with 8 home runs and 26 RBI. Her 23 RBIs in league play was 4th overall while her tally of seven conference homers also tied her for 4th place.

FIRST TEAM: Chandra Parr and Morgan Florey each earned a spot on the MVC All-Conference First Team for their performances this season. For Parr, it marked her second such honor. As a freshman, she made the squad in 2014. She finished the regular season hitting .306 with six homers and 23 runs batted in. It was also the first honor for Florey, who was one of the top overall players in the nation, contributing in the circle and at the plate. It is the first time UE has had two 1st-team players since 2009 when Jen Stahlhut and Kylie Wagner were recognized.

2017 PURPLE ACES SOFTBALL SOLID D: A steady glove at third base saw Susan Norris finish the year with a .977 fielding percentage. That helped her earn a spot on the MVC All-Defensive Team. She made just three errors in 80 attempts while notching 49 put-outs. BEST IN A WHILE: The Purple Aces finished up the 2016 season with a 24-26 record while going 12-14 in conference play. UE’s 12 conference victories marked the most since the team posted 12 league wins in 2007. By earning the #6 seed, the Aces matched their finish from 2008. KEEP ON ROLLING: Evansville won five of its last six MVC series in 2016. With 12 victories in league play, the Aces had one of their best seasons over the last 12 years. The program notched 11 wins in 2008 and 2013 and 12 in 2007. A 1312 mark in 2004 marked the last time UE finished conference play at .500 or above. ROAD STREAK: In the last 11 MVC road contests dating back to last season, the Aces are an impressive 8-3, including 7-2 in their last nine. CUT IN HALF: In 2015, the UE pitching staff finished 10th in the MVC with a 6.61 ERA as every pitcher finished with a 6.0 or higher. It was a total turnaround in 2016 as the staff cut over three runs off of its team ERA and is 3rd in the MVC with a 2.90 as a staff. The improvements are even more evident in MVC games. In 2015, UE had a 7.06 ERA in the Valley, last year that was cut to a 2.59, taking second in league-only games. TOP OF THE LINEUP: Michal Luckett led the UE squad with a .312 batting average last season. Seeing action in all 50 games, Luckett notched 49 hits in 157 at-bats, both team highs. Providing nice speed on the base path, Luckett was 15-of-18 in stolen bases. GAME CHANGER: Evansville first baseman Morgan Lambert had what was potentially the biggest hit of the season for the Purple Aces last season. With Evansville trailing Wichita State by a 4-0 score with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning in the second game of the April 8 doubleheader, Lambert belted a home run off of the centerfield wall to tie the game up as Evansville eventually came back to win the game and the series. UE’s leading hitter in league play batted .365 with 23 hits in 63 at-bats in conference games. On defense, Lambert was just as good, checking in with a .985 fielding percentage in conference play.

2017 PURPLE ACES SOFTBALL HEAD COACH MAT MUNDELL - THIRD SEASON In one of the nation’s top turnarounds, Mat Mundell led the Purple Aces to a 16-win increase in 2016 on his way to his staff being named the Missouri Valley Coaching Staff of the Year. Highlighting the season was a streak in April that saw the program win four consecutive conference series, including wins against eventual league champion Wichita State. Under his direction, Morgan Florey earned MVC Freshman of the Year honors and was named to the All-Conference First Team. Chandra Parr also earned a spot on the squad while Susan Norris was named to the MVC All-Defensive squad. The all-time winningest softball coach in University of Illinois Springfield history took the helm of the Purple Aces in 2014. Faced with difficult odds in his inaugural campaign at UE, Mundell did an admirable job with his squad. His work with Danielle Freeman resulted in her being named an All-MVC player in softball after doing the same in swimming. His work with first baseman Morgan Lambert resulted in her being named to the All-Defensive Team. After assuming the position of Head Softball Coach at UIS in 2009, Mundell experienced unparalleled success. Guiding the program through a period of transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II, Mundell guided the Prairie Stars to over 100 wins while recruiting and coaching 15 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Academic All-Americans and 24 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Academic All-Conference players. In 2014, Mundell coached sophomore pitcher Alex Smith, an All-GLVC second team selection who broke the school record for single-season wins and total strikeouts. The 2013 squad broke the school record for batting average (.277) and walks (142) while breaking the mark of total strikeouts (245) and a program-low 2.94 ERA. Prior to that, the 2012 campaign was a milestone one for Mundell and the Prairie Stars. UIS won a school record 36 games while taking the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division championship. The program made its first NCAA Division II Tournament appearance, which was the first for any sport in school history. The Prairie Stars, who also reached the GLVC Tournament and the NCAA Midwest Regional championship games, boasted four all-conference performers and two all-region players. Under the tutelage of Mundell, the Prairie Stars excelled in the classroom, earning a team grade-point average of at least a 3.20 every season, including a program-best 3.43 GPA in 2014 to earn its first-ever GLVC team academic award. A student-athlete himself, Mundell was a 3-year Varsity tennis player at Eureka College. He graduated with Bachelor’s degree in 2003. Mundell also studied education in his time at UIS. Mat is married to Kelly Mundell and the couple has a daughter Marlee.

2017 PURPLE ACES SOFTBALL SETTING THE SCENE: After one of the top ten turnarounds in the NCAA in 2016, the Purple Aces are poised for more in 2017. UE returns 18 players from last year and welcome five newcomers to this year’s squad. Just two players from last season are no longer with the team as Amanda Blankenship graduated and Danielle Freeman returned to the women’s swim team at UE. TOP COMPETITION: In non-conference play this season, UE will face three of the top six teams in the preseason poll. The Aces open the season in a tournament at #2 Auburn and travel to #1 Oklahoma in early March. In the final weekend of non-conference play, UE will face preseason #6 Michigan in a tournament hosted by the University of Kentucky. PRESEASON POLL: Evansville was picked sixth in the Preseason Missouri Valley Conference Poll. The Aces received 53 points, just one behind 5th-place Illinois State. Sophomore Morgan Florey was chosen to the Preseason All-Conference Team. EARLY RECOGNITION: The reigning MVC Freshman of the Year earned recognition from Fastpitch News (FPN) as she appeared on their list of the top 50 pitchers in the NCAA. Florey was ranked 33rd on the list. GREAT HONOR: Mat Mundell and assistants Ashley Balazs & Aubrey Watson were the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Coaching Staff of the Year. The trio turned around a team that went 10-45 and 2-23 in conference play in 2015 into a true league contender as the squad was 24-26 overall and 12-14 in conference play in 2016. The primary improvements have come on defense as the staff ERA went from 6.61 last year to 2.90 in 2016, which was third in the MVC. Defense also improved its fielding from .937 to .954. It was the first Coach of the Year honor for the program since Rita Schulz and Dee Stevens were honored by the North Star Conference in 1985. FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Morgan Florey was named the 2016 MVC Freshman of the Year. In her first season with the Purple Aces, Florey was one of the top pitchers in the conference and also one of the top freshmen hurlers in the nation. Florey finished second in the MVC with 214 strikeouts, a tally that was just three away from breaking the UE single-season mark of 216. Her ERA of 1.95 was third in the league while the four saves she earned tied the single-season mark for the Aces. On offense, Florey batted .297 with 8 home runs and 26 RBI. Her 23 RBIs in league play was 4th overall while her tally of seven conference homers also tied her for 4th place.

FIRST TEAM: Chandra Parr and Morgan Florey each earned a spot on the MVC All-Conference First Team for their performances this season. For Parr, it marked her second such honor. As a freshman, she made the squad in 2014. She finished the regular season hitting .306 with six homers and 23 runs batted in. It was also the first honor for Florey, who was one of the top overall players in the nation, contributing in the circle and at the plate. It is the first time UE has had two 1st-team players since 2009 when Jen Stahlhut and Kylie Wagner were recognized.

2017 PURPLE ACES SOFTBALL SOLID D: A steady glove at third base saw Susan Norris finish the year with a .977 fielding percentage. That helped her earn a spot on the MVC All-Defensive Team. She made just three errors in 80 attempts while notching 49 put-outs. BEST IN A WHILE: The Purple Aces finished up the 2016 season with a 24-26 record while going 12-14 in conference play. UE’s 12 conference victories marked the most since the team posted 12 league wins in 2007. By earning the #6 seed, the Aces matched their finish from 2008. KEEP ON ROLLING: Evansville won five of its last six MVC series in 2016. With 12 victories in league play, the Aces had one of their best seasons over the last 12 years. The program notched 11 wins in 2008 and 2013 and 12 in 2007. A 1312 mark in 2004 marked the last time UE finished conference play at .500 or above. ROAD STREAK: In the last 11 MVC road contests dating back to last season, the Aces are an impressive 8-3, including 7-2 in their last nine. CUT IN HALF: In 2015, the UE pitching staff finished 10th in the MVC with a 6.61 ERA as every pitcher finished with a 6.0 or higher. It was a total turnaround in 2016 as the staff cut over three runs off of its team ERA and is 3rd in the MVC with a 2.90 as a staff. The improvements are even more evident in MVC games. In 2015, UE had a 7.06 ERA in the Valley, last year that was cut to a 2.59, taking second in league-only games. TOP OF THE LINEUP: Michal Luckett led the UE squad with a .312 batting average last season. Seeing action in all 50 games, Luckett notched 49 hits in 157 at-bats, both team highs. Providing nice speed on the base path, Luckett was 15-of-18 in stolen bases. GAME CHANGER: Evansville first baseman Morgan Lambert had what was potentially the biggest hit of the season for the Purple Aces last season. With Evansville trailing Wichita State by a 4-0 score with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning in the second game of the April 8 doubleheader, Lambert belted a home run off of the centerfield wall to tie the game up as Evansville eventually came back to win the game and the series. UE’s leading hitter in league play batted .365 with 23 hits in 63 at-bats in conference games. On defense, Lambert was just as good, checking in with a .985 fielding percentage in conference play.
