Coach Rich Pein
Pein took over the UW-L men’s program in 1979 and proceeded to guide the squad to a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Championships that same year. Since then Pein has led the men’s swimming program to numerous top-20 finishes. In fact, UW-L has placed among the top-20 nationally in either the NAIA or the NCAA in 11 of Pein’s 30 seasons.

Coach Pein has been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Coach of the Year six times and Women’s Coach of the Year 10 times.
Pein Pool Campaign
Coach Pein led UW-L to its first WIAC title since 1978 with a championship in 1997-98 and has led the Eagles to six of the last 10 conference titles overall. The women’s team won four consecutive conference crowns from 2002-05, marking the first time in school history UW-L had won four straight WIAC women’s swimming titles.

Pein added the women’s swimming program to his coaching duties prior to the 1985-86 season. Pein has coached the women’s program to four NCAA Division III top-12 finishes, including a school-best fifth-place showing in 2003-04. UW-L was seventh at the 2010 national championships, eighth in 2009 and 13th in 2008. UW-L also scored a school record 215.0 points at the 2004 NCAA Division III Championships.

Dear Friends and Alumni of UW-L Swimming and Diving, It is with great pride that UW-L Athletics announces a fundraising campaign to rename the Mitchell Hall swimming facility after Richard Pein, the head coach of UW-L Swimming and Diving for the past three decades. Pein recently announced that the 2011-12 campaign will be his last as head coach of the Eagles, bringing to a close one of the longest and most successful coaching careers in UW-L history. Pein had an innate ability to connect with his student-athletes; he knew how to motivate each to maximize his or her potential in the pool, in the classroom, and in life. He has taught enduring lessons to the hundreds of student-athletes who have come through his program, lessons that are applicable far beyond the confines of a swimming pool. It is that lasting imprint, far more than the championships and the victories — although there have certainly been plenty of those as well — that we wish to honor by creating the Pein Pool. Please review the attached information for specifics related to the fundraising campaign. We will structure your gift to fit your personal situation, including donations of varying amounts and pledges made over time. Why should I give? Because Rich Pein has made a difference in the lives of hundreds of student-athletes over the course of his 30 years at UW-La Crosse. There is no better way to honor his tremendous service to the University, UW-L Athletics, and the swimming and diving student-athletes than to put his name on the facility that he has called home for three decades.
Where will my money go? All funds raised through the campaign will be used for the exclusive benefit of the UW-L men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs. Fundraised dollars will help make improvements to the Mitchell Hall pool facility and will offset other operating expenses associated with the swimming and diving teams. Donated dollars will not be used to fund general Athletics operations, nor will they be available for general University use.
What do I get? First and foremost, donors will receive the personal satisfaction of knowing that they helped honor one of UW-L’s great coaches, a man who has given his entire adult life to helping prepare UW-L studentathletes for life after college through the rigors of intercollegiate competition. Secondly, those donors choosing to participate at a Gold ($1,000), Silver ($500), or Bronze ($250) level will be recognized on a plaque outside the pool facility.
