Reader’s Theater - Bullying

Whole Class Read Aloud It’s Monday. Sam and Jack race down the street just in time to see the school bus pull up to the stop. They see some bullies pushing a new student who is waiting for the bus. The bus driver opens the door and yells to them. “Stop it! Get on the bus!” Laughing, the bullies go to the back of the bus. The new student sits behind the bus driver, crying. Sam and Jack sit with Pam on the bus. “Why did the bullies make fun of the new student?” asked Sam. “Their shoe laces did not match” answered Pam. Jack said, “That is bad!” When the bus gets to school, Sam tells the bullies not to make fun of the new student. One bully shouted, “Do not tell me what to do!” Another said, “YEAH!” The bullies walk away. At lunchtime, the friends meet. Sam shared an idea, “I know! We need to wear laces in our shoes that do not match.” Suddenly, Pam smiles and says, “Can we try to get all of the students in our class to do that?” “Great idea,” said Sam. It is the end of the school day. Sam and Pam talked to their teacher. The teacher told the class that on Friday everyone should wear laces in their shoes that did not match. Everyone said, “Sure hope this idea works.” Friday came. When the bullies got on the bus, they could not believe their eyes. Everyone had shoe laces that did not match! The bus driver smiles and says, “Good morning!” The bullies grumble in low voices, “Good morning.” The bullies sit down. They don’t talk to each other -- or anyone else -- during the ride to school. When they got to school, the teacher was wearing shoe laces that did not match! The new student who was being bullied taps Pam on the shoulder and whispers two words to her, “Thank you.” Then the new student smiles and waves to Pam. She waves back as the new student walks down the hallway, head held high. 2
