Hello Tenino Families! Welcome back to school. I hope you had a wonderful time celebrating the holiday season with friends and family. As we begin 2018, I want to express my appreciation to our teachers, support staff and parents for making the start of the school year a great success. Our teachers have participated in numerous professional development activities focusing on our new reading curriculum - Wonders. Our goal is to use the new texts to have students reading and writing at a high level each and every day. We are so fortunate to have excellent resources and fantastic teachers. Thank you, parents and family members as we work together to provide our kids the best education possible. If you are new to our school, welcome to Tenino. We trust that you will find that you are now part of an excellent school community. This memo provides updates and information that will keep you in the loop as we work together to make TES a great school for all our kids.

Reading

• Excellence: Our theme for the month is excellence. (It’s the E in TIGER) • Every day teachers prepare lessons that are rigorous and stimulating. To encourage excellence we will begin a Tiger-paw competition, where each class and grade level will be recognized for their efforts. Please spend some time talking to your students about the importance of excellence and always doing their best! • Routines: As we get back into the swing things, please be mindful of re-establishing routines. Now is a good time to review homework expectations with your child. Check with his or her teacher if you have any questions. • Bundle Up!: The forecast calls for an unusually cold start to winter. In preparation please remind students to dress for the weather. Kids have two recesses a day and we want them to get exercise without getting too cold.

Night

• MAP (Measurement of Academic Progress) Testing: All students will be taking the MAP assessment in reading and math during the month of January. The MAP test is administered three times each year: fall, winter and spring. The test measures foundational academic skills. Test results provide us with a way to monitor the progress of individual students and adjust instruction as needed. • Holiday Store: Our holiday store brought in $4,000. The earnings will be used to support school programs. Thanks to the Choose Love organization for donating money to provide coupons for students to purchase gifts for family members. • Food Drive Success: What a success! We gathered over 1,000 items to support our local food bank. Thank you all for contributing. • Thank you Lions Club: The Lions Club of Tenino presented our school with a generous donation of $500. The gift will be used to support

Proud to be your principal. Thank you for your support and GO TIGERS! Charly Harrington
