Catalog Course Description: This course is a comprehensive, diagnostic-prescriptive program for students requiring basic reading skills, including instruction in phonics, vocabulary development, and literal and inferential comprehension skills. Fagan Townsend Press Library Required Materials ü 1” Binder, Composition (Spiral Notebook) and Paper ü Writing Instruments (Pen,#2 Pencil, and Highlighters) and Sticky Notes ü Two (4) Scantrons, #865-E (Nelson Denney Reading Test) *Important Notice: Students should bring ALL required books to EVERY class meeting. Due to copyright infringement laws, photocopies of the texts will not be accepted. This is a reading class. Students MUST purchase and read the required texts. “Sharing” workbooks is NOT allowed. Classroom Device Policy: o Turn off/mute all electronic devices before class. o The use of cell phones and text messaging is not permitted during the class. o All electronics are stored out of sight throughout the class session. These devices interfere with the learning environment and impede instruction. o Use good judgment by stepping outside of the class to take emergency phone calls.

Student Learning Objectives (SLO’s): ü Students will demonstrate the ability to use phonics skills to decode single and polysyllabic words utilizing consonants and vowels to determine pronunciation of common English words and correctly reading the words aloud. ü Students will demonstrate literal and inferential reading ability of material written at the 6th grade level, based on Fry’s Readability Scale by locating factual information and determining unstated main idea as presented in readings and correctly answering related comprehension questions. Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: v Demonstrate the ability to decode and encode words using phonetic analysis, structural analysis, and syllabication. v Employ basic comprehension skills (based on materials determined to be at level 6.0 when Fry’s Readability Scale is applied) of determining main idea, locating supporting details, learning vocabulary in context, and drawing logical inferences. v Compose written and oral responses to reading showing critical thinking. v Demonstrate one level of increased vocabulary development showing understanding of meaning, pronunciation and usage. v Demonstrate the ability to read at or above level 6.0 based on the Nelson Denny Reading Test.

ATTENDANCE AND CLASS PARTICIPATION Class participation and attendance are mandatory. Please try not to miss any class. You are expected to notify the instructor in advance of any potential conflict. Attendance and class participation is considered in determining the final grade. Two or more (2) absences will result in a loss of participation points. There will be in-class activities regarding course content and other related issues. Students must be present and will receive credit for their attendance and participation in these activities. Please note if you are absent for more than four sessions without a valid documented excuse during the semester, you may be dropped from the class. Arriving late and leaving early is strongly discouraged. If you must leave before class is dismissed, please inform the instructor before class begins. Students are allowed one early dismissal at the discretion of the instructor. Early dismissals thereafter will be equal to one (1) absence. Two (2) tardies are equal to one (1) absence. Reading 920 Class Requirements:

This class requires that you complete a combination of lecture and lab assignments in order to meet above mentioned course objectives. Nelson Denny Reading Test: Students enrolled in READ 920 are required to complete the Nelson Denny Reading Test (NDRT), Form G, pre-test; and Form H, post-test. NDRTs are timed assessments. Students must arrive on time. There is no late admittance. Make-up tests are not administered. Failure to complete the NDRT, Form G, will result in being dropped from the course. 2

Daily Writing Tasks/Journal: Writing activities and responses to readings will develop writing, reading, and critical thinking skills. Your journal will not be graded for grammar and is a way to have you critically analyze a particular idea connected with our course goal of building hope and mindset. However, you will be required to incorporate a minimum of five (5) newly learned vocabulary words in your writing. Lecture: Students will work each day through a set lesson plan focusing on content from Groundwork for College Reading , Groundwork for Better Vocabulary and Six Way Paragraph in the Content Areas. Also, students will complete exercises that will reinforce skills based on content learning focus of the day. Daily Homework: HOMEWORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED LATE! You are expected to submit assignments as scheduled on the course syllabus. All assignments are due at the beginning of class. I will not accept homework completed during class. Please make sure your assignments are legible and complete. Incomplete work will not receive full credit.

Weekly Exams: Students will have weekly exams based on the course’s main text, Groundwork for College Reading. If absent, students cannot make-up the exam(s) missed. Although late arrivers are allowed to take the exam, students who arrive late are not given additional time to complete the exam. Exams will be administered during lab. Weekly Quizzes: Students will have weekly vocabulary quizzes on the words covered in Groundwork for a Better Vocabulary (GBV) text following every three (3) chapters. If absent, students cannot make-up the vocabulary quiz(zes) missed. Although late arrivers are allowed to take the vocabulary quiz, students arriving late are NOT given additional time to complete the quiz. Quizzes will be administered during lab. Final Book Report: Book reports, based on the novel Final Course Exam: Students enrolled in READ 920 are required to complete a final exam. Academic Advancement Lab The lab provides access to computers, software, printers, and tutors. The Academic Advancement Lab is located in the Liberal Arts building, Room 206 and is where the lab portion of the class will meet. All students will be required to complete a combination of assignments from each textbook, Groundwork for College Reading and the Groundwork for Better Vocabulary Workbook. Students will also be given a lab packet that will cover the necessary learning skills necessary to advance and show personal improvement on the Nelson Denney Post Reading Test.

Class Policy for Late Work: Missed Assignments/Make Up Work: It is your responsibility to arrange for any make-up assignments in advance. In cases of illness or emergency contact me as soon as possible. Missed assignments cannot be made up unless you have a viable emergency or verified illness. On the first day of class it may be helpful to exchange an email address or phone number with a classmate so you can obtain class information in case of absence.

Late Assignments: Assignments must be turned in by the due date, however if a homework assignment is late due to an absence, assignments may be submitted for full credit upon your return. Homework assignments submitted after one absence will not receive full credit. Assignments submitted after two absences will receive no credit. Late assignments for an absence or non-absence are due by the next class meeting. Late assignments for non-absences will not receive full credit. Make Up Tests/Exams: There are no make-ups for mastery tests or quizzes. Unit tests or exams may be made up at the discretion of the instructor. A make-up exam is only for students who miss the exam due to an absence or unforeseen circumstances. You must call or email me before the next class meeting if you wish to make-up a unit test or exam. The make-up unit test or exam must be taken before the next class meeting. Students will only be allowed to make-up one test. A Word to the Wise –Show up on TEST DAY! EXTRA CREDIT Extra credit may be given at the discretion of the instructor. BREAKDOWN OF YOUR FINAL GRADE Total points earned will determine the academic grade at the end of the semester. Students who earn an A or B in Reading 920 must complete A or B coursework in the lecture/lab and earn a 6.0 or better on the Nelson Reading Test. If you fail to meet this standard, the highest grade you can earn is a "C". GRADING A= 90-100 (6th grade or higher on the Nelson-Denny) B= 80-89 (6th grade or higher on the Nelson-Denny) C=70-79 D=60-69 F= 0-59

ACADEMIC HONESTY AND CONDUCT/STATEMENT OF PLAGIARISM It is the belief at San Bernardino Valley College that students share a responsibility with their instructors for assuring that their education is honestly attained.
