A group of 28 Year 7 and 8 students along with Mrs Cady, Mrs Poppleton and Mrs Collins had a wonderful morning with author Cathy Cassidy. The event was held at Yarm school and was part of Cathy’s tour to promote her new book in the Chocolate Box Girls series – Coco Caramel and was attended by students from lots of school across Stockton. Cathy talked about where she gets inspiration for her books and how she begins to write. She also told us about how she started writing when she was at school but always got in trouble for daydreaming too much. The girls said afterwards her talk inspired many of them to start writing themselves. There was also time to meet Cathy herself for a quick photo and sign a few copies of her new book.

Year 7 have been busy reading and quizzing as part of the Accelerated Reader programme this term. Accelerated reader is an independent reading programme that encourages and improves students’ reading. All our Year 7s have taken a STAR reading test and chose their own books from the School Library, then when they have finished a book they take a short quiz aiming to get 80%. If they get 100% they move up a level. There are lots of incentives, certificates and prizes for students . Year 7 have been given a target to read 75 million words between them by July 2014; you’re over half way there so keep reading Year 7!

Cathy Cassidy
Our favourite authors this term have been Cathy Cassidy, who we met at Yarm School in February, and Suzanne Collins with the release of the next Hunger Games film. If you would like to join one of the book groups or would like a reading list for any of the above themes just ask in the Library and Resource Centre. They also had the tough decision of putting together a list of their top books and voting in the World Book Day poll ‘Writes of Passage’ books that changed your life.
GET CAUGHT READING Year 7 were also given the challenge to get caught reading on World Book Day, the best photos were then shown in assembly the following week and they were all given a prize. Here are some more of the best photos.

LIBRARY ACTIVITIES
WORLD BOOK DAY 2014
We celebrated World Book Day all week in the Library and Resource Centre. This included fun activities based around the most popular books in the Library at the moment. Students had a go at doing their own Tom Gates style illustrations, completed puzzles and activities about Percy Jackson and we showed movie style book trailers for new fiction.
All tutor groups received their World Book Day vouchers and were challenged to choose their top 10 children's or young adult books as a group. This was part of the WBD poll of ‘Book that will change your life, the results being released on World Book Day.
The two library book clubs and the student librarians got together for a big book party where they played games with a book theme and enjoyed food, famous from books, including a huge Matilda style chocolate cake and Bertie Bott’s every flavour jelly beans.
Northfield’s team came 2nd in Stockton Libraries first ever World Book Day Quiz. Two teams of students from Years 7 & 8 took on the challenge of the biggest quiz of all about children’s books. It was a tense competition with four rounds including heroes and villains, TV and film, general knowledge and a picture round. Our teams did brilliantly coming 2nd overall– Well done!
