Nyal D. Deems of Varnum Law is a partner in the Real Estate Practice Group. He focuses his practice on conveyance and lease transactions, land use approvals for various development projects including shopping centers, resorts, residential subdivisions, marinas and commercial projects, construction and permanent lending, on behalf of lenders and borrowers and real estate investment trusts. He has unique municipal experience having served as a member of the East Grand Rapids City Commission and Chairperson of its Planning Commission, Mayor of East Grand Rapids, and Chairperson of the Grand Rapids Metropolitan Council. Nyal served as a supply officer in the United States Navy. He was recently named Grand Rapids Real Estate Lawyer of the Year by U.S. News - Best Lawyers. He is a fellow and past president of the American College of Mortgage Attorneys and a fellow in the American College of Real Estate Lawyers. Stephen M. Guerra is the managing partner of Makower Abbate Guerra Wegner Vollmer PLLC, and focuses his practice primarily in the areas of condominium and subdivision association law, corporate governance law, and real estate development and finance. Mr. Guerra currently sits on the Board of the Community Association Institute (CAI) Michigan Chapter, is a Member of CAI’s Legislative Action Committee, and is a member of National CAI and the Michigan Real Property Law Section. Mr. Guerra has authored articles for the CAI Michigan Chapter, Michigan Lawyer’s Weekly, and the Michigan Real Property Review, and has been a seminar presenter for the CAI Michigan Chapter, HOALeader.com and a roundtable presenter for the State Bar of Michigan’s Real Property Section. Mr. Guerra was also named a “Rising Star” by Michigan Super Lawyer’s Annual Publication in 2013 and 2014. Mark P. Krysinski is a partner Jaffe Raitt Heuer & Weiss and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor. Mark specializes in the commercial development financing and leasing of office, industrial, apartment and retail projects nationwide, complex mixeduse condominium developments, manufactured housing communities and multi-family housing communities. Mark has served as Chair of the Real Property Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan and the Commercial Leasing Committee. Joe concentrates his practice on commercial real estate and business law. He represents a wide variety of clients, including entrepreneurs, startups, retailers, real estate developers, manufacturers, home healthcare companies, physicians, dentists, surgical centers, banks and nonprofit organizations, in all aspects of their businesses. This includes assisting his clients with the formation of business entities, negotiation of leases (shopping center, industrial and office), syndication of investment opportunities, negotiation of loan documents, and the purchase and sale of businesses, land and buildings. Nicholas G. Maloof is President and General Counsel of Associated Environmental Services, LLC (AES), an environmental services, land development and real estate consulting firm based in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Mr. Maloof is an active member of the State Bar of Michigan, a Registered Professional Geologist in the State of Tennessee, has over eighteen years of experience as a transactional attorney and over twentyseven years of experience in the field of environmental and real estate consulting. Mr. Maloof received his Juris Doctor (JD) from Michigan State University-Detroit College of Law, his Master of Science Degree (MS) in Earth Science (focused on Contaminant Hydrogeology) from Western Michigan University and his Bachelor Degree in Business Administration (BS) from Aquinas College. Mr. Maloof is also a licensed Real Estate Broker and Title Insurance Resident Producer in the State of Michigan. Mr. Maloof has been heavily involved in the real estate industry and served as President of the Board of Directors of the Commercial Board of Realtors (CBOR) in Michigan in 2007. In addition to being President of CBOR, Mr. Maloof also served as a Member of the Board of Directors for the Michigan Commercial Alliance of Realtors (MiCAR) for three years ending 2010; is a Member of the International Counsel of Shopping Centers (ICSC) Alliance Program Steering Committee; has previously sat on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) - Detroit Chapter; is a Member of the University of Michigan/Urban Land Institute (UM/ULI) Real Estate Forum Steering Committee; and is a State of Michigan accredited continuing education instructor. Mr. Maloof is an active member and frequent speaker for the State Bar of Michigan Real Property Law section, ICSC, CBOR and Lorman Education. Brandy L. Mathie, a shareholder with Kerr Russell in Detroit, devotes her practice to real estate matters, with a particular focus on development, financing, acquisitions, dispositions, leasing, and the formation of specialpurpose business entities. Brandy has successfully guided clients through various transactions involving commercial, residential, mixed-use, and municipal properties, and understands both the legal and business challenges that can arise. Brandy is known for devising creative solutions to even the most complex issues, with the ability to analyze and synthesize complicated historical real estate into understandable checklists, charts and forms. She has participated in real property transactions across the U.S., some of which have involved complex publicprivate partnerships, sustainable energy, and other emerging areas of real property law. Richard D. immediate past member of the governing Council of the Real Property Law Section (RPLS) of the State Bar of Michigan and an active participant in many of its committees including Zoning and Land Use Planning, former co-chair of the Continuing Legal Education Committee, the RPLS Membership Committee, and is the current co-chair of the newly formed RPLS Academy committee. He has also served as a volunteer arbitrator for the Attorney Grievance Commission. Mr. Rattner is an adjunct professor at Wayne State University Law School, where he teaches “Developing the Commercial Real Estate Project.” He is a frequent lecturer on a variety of real estate related topics at continuing legal education seminars, for real estate brokers and other business organizations. He has recently been a presenter at events sponsored by Michigan’s Institute for Continuing Legal Education, the International Council of Shopping Centers, the Michigan Association of Planning, and the Real Property Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan. Mr. Rattner’s most recent article is “After Koontz: Practical Considerations, Real Implications,” Michigan Real Property Review, Winter 2014. Mr. Rattner is a past chairman of the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan, and a past member of the University of Michigan’s Advisory Board for Intercollegiate Athletics. He is frequently recognized by his peers for legal excellence and by ranking organizations, most recently honored to be named a “Leading Lawyer,” and included in Best Lawyers®, which named him “Lawyer of the Year” in the Detroit area for litigation - land use and zoning in 2012 and 2014, in 2016 he was named “Lawyer of the Year” for land use and zoning law in the newly designated “Troy Metro Area,” which generally covers Oakland and Macomb Counties, and in 2017 he was named “Lawyer of the Year” for litigation-real estate in the Troy Metro Area. Scavone, Jr., is a member of Bodman PLC and Chair of Bodman’s Real Estate Practice Group. He has represented banks and other financial institutions in a wide variety of complex, multi-million dollar, secured loans and other financial arrangements involving real estate. Mr. Scavone also has extensive experience with commercial real estate loan workouts, foreclosures, receiverships, deeds in lieu of foreclosure, and sales of REO. In addition to banking and finance matters, Mr. Scavone also represents clients in complex real estate transactions, including purchases and sales, commercial leasing and development work. Mr. Scavone is a member of the State Bar of Michigan (Real Property Law and Business Law Sections). He has extensive experience in boundary disputes, land use restrictions, enforcement of deed covenants complicated foreclosures, large land contract forfeitures, plat vacation, receiverships, liquor control commission licensing matters associated with real property uses and receiverships among other real property issues. His other litigation practice areas include uniform commercial code matters and complex contract disputes.
