A word from Pastor Schuyler Dear Friends, For the next few weeks we will be talking about the money thing. I know. Most of us don’t enjoy this. I know I’d rather talk about love, harmony, feeding the hungry, and so forth. I’ve never been real certain about why we get a little uncomfortable when we talk about money in church. Certainly we don’t think that the costs of ministry just magically show up somehow. And of course we know that all this marvelous work done by our church takes resources—that is, our gifts. I may be wrong, but I think the discomfort comes because we have successfully drawn a line between the spiritual world and the material world in our culture. On one hand, we view spirituality as pure and untainted by the world. This is the source of the motivation we hear from folks who call themselves “spiritual, but not religious.” For them, the world of religion is tainted. So they keep their spirituality pure by disengaging from messy religion. Then, on the other hand, we have the material world. This is the land of pay checks, bills, credit cards, and mortgages. Unlike our allegedly pure spirituality, the material world is gritty, messy and tough. So when we’re in church we don’t want that messy world intervening too much into our nice, spiritual place. I get that. In fact, I share that idea, to a degree. But we all know that this line we’ve drawn is a pretend kind of thing, don’t we? We know that in reality our spirituality is lived out most fully in this messy, wild and crazy world. We know that true spirituality is practiced in the material world by imperfect and wonderful people. And we know that this beautiful and unpredictable thing called ministry calls us to commit our financial resources so that the hungry might be fed, the homeless might be housed, and the broken hearted might find solace. And joining you in this knowing, I want to thank you for your generous pledge for the coming year. Your commitment matters. Your caring makes a difference.
