Recent Technology Tools for Data Fusion and Visualization 2007 EBC Ocean Management Conference

Craig Swanson, Ph.D. Kelly Knee Applied Science Associates

Overview IOOS provides a backbone for huge amounts of data. Great, but…. How do scientists access this data to solve ocean issues? How do managers and policy makers use data? How do we integrate ocean data with common tools such as GIS?

Projects • Ocean.US, NOAA, NAVY Demonstration project to evaluate the IOOS Data Management and Communications (DMAC) and disparate data integration for Marine Mammal Avoidance & Sea Basing

Integration of data:

•Open Open Geospatial Consortium Web Mapping Service (OGC WMS)

•OPeNDAP OPeNDAP (GRIB, NetCDF)

•Geodatabases Geodatabases

•ArcWeb ArcWeb Services

•National National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD) Web Services •COASTMAP COASTMAP Web Services

•NOAA, NOAA, NAVY, USCG, RA, USACE, Other

Projects • US Coast Guard SAROPS National Search & Rescue system with on-line Metocean Data Server

Integration of data:

•NOAA, NOAA, NAVY, USCG, RA, USACE, Other •Observation Observation Data (NDBC buoys, satellite, drifters, Sea Surface Radar, etc.) •Model Model Data

•Seasonal Seasonal data

•Tidal Tidal databases

•Aggregation, Aggregation, Objective Analysis Tools

Visualization Tools • • • • •

GoogleEarth High resolution basemaps 3D building models Seamless panning and zooming Inexpensive Easy distribution of images and data

Visualization Tools GoogleEarth: Creating Static Images • Import KMLs, shapefiles, images overlays, etc into Google Earth • Use Premium Printing addon for export of high resolution images

Visualization Tools GoogleEarth: Creating Static Images

Visualization Tools GoogleEarth: Creating Static Images

GoogleEarth: Limitations • Visualization only, no analysis • Time tool does not handle multiple time-stamped files well • Difficult to manipulate symbology within Google Earth • Does not handle data below sea level • Cannot ‘stack’ layers

Visualization Tools ArcGIS Explorer: Creating Static Images

ORCAS-NET-COASTMAP • Build an undersea distributed network system (UDNS) to enhance URI’s Ocean Response Coastal Analysis System (ORCAS) and merge it with COASTMAP, an integrated undersea data collection, management, and visualization system.

Conclusions

•Cultural and tribal boundaries are difficult to overcome. Applies to tools and data.

•We love talking to people who are the same as us, especially when they agree with us…

•We need to look to other industries/technologies for ideas (GoogleEarth ⇨ Display of Metocean data) •Important to integrate the best available tools, web services enables access to many types of data.
