Recommended burs & polishers for JTS training & setting lessons
Twist drill
Ball bur (Round bur)
Hart bur (90° bearing cutter)
Cone bur (Setting bur)
The drill bit is used for most projects training tests & setting. Students should have sizes from 0.7mm – 2mm available
This bur is used for most projects training tests & setting. It is extremely versatile and generally used for metal removal. Students should have sizes 0.5mm – 3mm available
Used mainly for stone setting, but the sharp edge makes it a good texturing tool. It has a similar profile to a brilliant cut stone; this makes it ideal for cutting the stone seat (bearing). Setting students should have sizes 0.5mm – 3mm available
This bur is used for stone setting. It has a similar profile to the pavilion of a standard cut round stone: this makes it ideal for cutting the seating. However a complete bur size collection is recommended as the stones need to friction fit rather than click in.
Tapered bur (Cross cut)
Bud bur
Flame bur
Cup bur
This bur is used for pre-cutting between the micro pave settings and performing side wall cut work. It is also useful for carving single and multiple settings in the training program. Students should have sizes 0.7mm – 1.8mm available
Used in setting & training lessons. This bur is used for performing side wall cut work. It is also useful for scalloping (shaping) crown settings & gallery. It is also good for removing minimal metal from settings using a pin vice. Students will get by with around a 3mm bur
Used in setting & training lessons. This bur is an elongated bud bur, so it will perform a similar task with a slightly more acute cutting angle. Ideal for finer work &smaller burs can be used for micro setting as an alternative to the tapered bur. Students will get by with a 1.2mm & 2mm bur
Used predominantly for stone setting this bur is used for shaping claw tips (prongs) to achieve a consistent rounded shape. It is important to choose the correct size to avoid claw tip damage. Students should have sizes 0.1.5mm – 2.3mm available
Pointed cone bur
Emery mandrel (Split
Moores disk (& snap on
Used in setting & training lessons. This bur can be used for performing side wall cut work and scalloping (shaping) crown settings & gallery. It is also ideal for clearing the inside of a setting for stone seating. Students will get by with around a 3mm bur
mandrel) This mandrel is used to wrap emery paper for preparing the inside of rings for polishing. It can also be used for other curved surfaces. Avoid stone contact below hardness 9 (corundum)
mandrel) The Moores disk JTS prefers is the plastic backed aluminium oxide. They come in fine medium & coarse grades. It is ideal for sanding in tight, hard to get to areas. Avoid stone contact below hardness 9 (corundum)
Shofu silicone carbide rubber polisher (Mounted
Shofu silicone carbide rubber polisher (Mounted
Mounted brushes straight & pencil (Stiff black bristle)
Cotton mops (Mounted buffs)
Separating disk (& screw end
greenie) Greenies come in various shapes, square knife edge bullet & floppy. They are perfect for polishing and are safe around stones.
This finishing mop is used for precision polishing around settings and hard to get to places. They are less aggressive and will maintain sharp edges. JTS uses straight pencil and cup shapes.
This finishing mop is attached to your handpiece and is used for precision polishing in the training and setting program. It polishes the inside of rings and around settings. The finishing should then be done using a polishing motor
mandrel) The separating disks are made from silicon carbide and although its not crucial to have them for training, they are handy to have for cutting & shaping steel to make tool adjustments.
brownie) Brownies come in various shapes, square knife edge bullet & floppy. They are perfect for pre-polishing. Avoid stone contact below hardness 9 (corundum).
