I must really like this charity.” Loads of celebs get involved in Red Nose Day will end with a night filled with a whole heap of telly treats Red Nose Day every two years. how red nose day helps The money raised by Red Nose Day goes towards helping so many children, men and women, in the UK and many other communities around the world where aid is needed. Take 12-year-old Hassan (left), for example. Not so long Hassan ago, he watched his mother get taken away in an ambulance, as the Ebola virus spread through Sierra Leone. She never came back home. His father died when he was five, so Hassan was left without parents. To stop the spread of the Ebola virus, yellow tape was used to separate Hassan and his neighbours from the community. They were placed under quarantine, with police and armed guards preventing them from leaving. Food was brought in by Street Child Sierra Leone, which receives money raised through Red Nose Day. People wearing protective suits and goggles came to disinfect Hassan’s house. They took away all the family’s belongings and sprayed anything that Hassan’s mother had touched or stepped on. He became scared they were going to take him away, too. Schools in Sierra Leone closed down for eight months during the Ebola outbreak and Hassan stayed home with his older brother. Eventually he went to live a few doors away with his uncle and aunt. Street Child Sierra Leone provided Hassan with

supplies so he could attend school again, and gave a smallbusiness loan to his aunt so that she could earn enough money to feed the family and ensure Hassan continues his education. His favourite subject is mathematics, he is a huge Arsenal fan and he dreams of being a doctor one day. Just by putting on a Red Nose next week, you could be helping another little boy or girl like Hassan turn their life around.

did you nose? (ha!)

There have been 39 versions of the Red Nose over the •years. If all the Red Noses that have ever been sold were laid •out end to end, they’d stretch from London to Ankara in Turkey! In 2011, a`er they all sold out, one man drove from Manchester to Comic Relief HQ in London, to pick one up for his daughter. The idea for the Red Nose came in an early mee#ng at Comic Relief HQ when someone idly started drawing on their nose in red pen. Over 70 million Red Noses have been sold in the UK so far. £78 million was raised last Red Nose Day. Since the very first Red Nose Day, over £1 billion has been raised for charity.

special REPORT AIM OF THE NEWS COMPREHENSIONS News reports are unique non-fiction texts. Being real, they naturally engage students, and with the range of topics that are covered, help to develop pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the wider world outside the classroom. The reports are ideal for short, focused comprehension or discussion activities. Along with the opportunity to find fascinating facts and appreciate the opinions of those involved, there is plenty to be inferred and deduced to understand in more depth what is being reported. Like authors, journalists play with language, so news ‘stories’ are rich nuggets of text to investigate and provide the opportunity for literacy programmes. TEACHER ANSWER GUIDE The teacher answers are intended to provide a guide to the reading skill each question is practising. Suggestions are given for a starting point for responses that students would be expected to give at the start of KS3. Further suggestions then give fuller, more developed responses that students will work towards by the end of KS3, in preparation for the non-fiction elements of GCSE English Language.

special REPORT A5. What is the “Comic Adventure”? READING SKILL-Find and explain informaZon Possible answer StarZng point • The Comic Adventure is a digital comic strip game. Development • It will feature the famous Red Noses and celebriZes such as Professor Stephen Hawking, Warwick Davis, Nick Grimshaw and Joe Sugg will be providing the voices for them. • The game can be found at rednoseday.com/kids/comic-adventure Part B B1. Why do you think in this year’s Red Noses include an ultra-rare Frankinose and that all of the Red Noses have been put in surprise bags? READING SKILL- Infer informaZon based on own knowledge Possible answer StarZng point • I think that there is an ultra-rare Frankinose in this year’s Red Nose collecZon and that they have all been put in surprise bags because it will make people buy more Red Noses. This will mean that more money will be raised for good causes. Development • When Red Nose Day started only one Red Nose was designed each year. However, if more than one nose is available then it increases the fundraising potenZal of the Red Noses because people want to collect them. Punng the Red Noses in surprise bags takes this one step further because people have no way of knowing which nose they will get. Due to the likelihood of genng duplicates, people may end up buying more Red Noses than they had intended because they are searching for the ultra-rare Frankinose or a parZcular Red Nose needed to complete their collecZon. This strategy taps into the popularity of trading card games like Pokémon and collecZble toys like Moshi Monsters, which all use blind packs in order to enZce consumers. B2. Why are so many celebriZes menZoned in this report? READING SKILL- Infer informaZon and jusZfy with evidence from the text Possible answer StarZng point • Lots of celebriZes are menZoned in this report because it makes Red Nose Day seem more important. Development • People tend to idolise celebriZes and to be influenced by them. Therefore, if many well-known celebriZes support a cause then it tends to give it status and to make the general public view it as worthy of their support too. This is known as celebrity endorsement. B3. What do you think that Stephen Hawking meant when he said: “I’m a world-renowned scienZst who has shaped our understanding of the universe and I am being asked to make snot jokes. I must really like this charity”? READING SKILL- Infer informaZon and jusZfy with evidence from the text Possible answer StarZng point • I think that Stephen Hawking was making a joke about how he is not the type of celebrity who people might expect to see associated with Red Nose Day. Unlike many of the other celebriZes menZoned, he is not in the entertainment business. He is known for his intellect and for being a brilliant scienZst. Therefore, he is publicising how he has been taken out of his comfort zone and it is likely that people will be intrigued about his involvement. Development

special REPORT Furthermore, as Hawkings says, the fact that he is agreeing to make “snot jokes” even though it is out of character for him shows how much he likes the charity. If someone as intelligent as Stephen Hawking is willing to play the fool for Red Nose Day then it helps to encourage readers to ignore any embarrassment that they may feel and join in. B4. Explain exactly how Red Nose Day helped Hassan. READING SKILL- Infer informaZon and jusZfy with evidence from the text Possible answer StarZng point • Hassan was helped because some of the money raised by Red Nose Day is used to support Street Child Sierra Leone and that was the organisaZon that gave him much needed assistance when his mum was killed by the Ebola virus. Development • When his mum died, Hassan and his neighbours were placed under quaranZne in case they had been infected with the virus. Police and armed guards prevented Hassan from leaving his home. Street Child Sierra Leone helped Hassan by bringing him food. Now that Hassan is living with his uncle and aunt, Street Sierra Leone has provided further assistance by giving him supplies to enable him to adend school again. A small-business loan has also been given to his aunt so that she can earn enough money to feed the family and ensure that Hassan conZnues his educaZon. B5. What is the effect of having Hassan’s story included in this report? READING SKILL- Infer informaZon and jusZfy with evidence from the text Possible answer StarZng point • Hassan’s story makes it easier for readers to empathise with those in need and to want to donate money to Red Nose Day in order to help them. Development • It can be difficult to empathise if a report just gives nameless staZsZcs about all those needing help. It can even be off-punng because the problem seems insurmountable and so if you are only able to donate a lidle bit then it seems pointless because it doesn’t seem as if it will make a difference. However, the use of personal evidence, like Hassan’s story shows that those in need are real people and that the money donated is making a difference. Therefore, it persuades people to donate. Part C C1. Give examples of the puns used in this report and comment on the effect of their use. READING SKILL-Recognise effect of language choices Possible answer StarZng point • There are lots of puns on the word “nose” and “red” in this report. Development • It is stated that the report will tell you everything you need to “nose” rather than “know” about Red Nose Day. The same pun is also used in the sentence “Who ‘nose’ what will happen.” Furthermore, Joe Sugg is said to be “red-dy” rather than “ready” to get involved in the fundraising. • The use of the puns puts the emphasis on the key words “red” and “nose” in order to highlight Red Nose Day. • A pun is a type of joke. In this case the humour is based on the way in which the words sound alike. Therefore the use of puns is appropriate because Red Nose Day is all about having fun and making jokes in order to raise money. •

C2. All of this year’s Red Noses are shown posed for a photo apart from Frankinose. What is the impact of this on the reader?

special REPORT READING SKILL-IdenZfy benefits of text organisaZon and presentaZon Possible answer StarZng point • The fact that Frankinose isn’t pictured makes the ultra-rare nose seem even more intriguing. Development • Having this year’s Red Noses all lined up together makes the report look visually interesZng. Futhermore, because they are shown at the top of the page it makes the reader aware at a glance that the arZcle is about Red Nose Day. However, the absence of Frankinose makes it seem even more elusive and thus people are more likely to want to search for the ultra-rare nose. In the process they’ll be buying lots of noses and raising more money for Red Nose Day. Ques#on for discussion C3. It isn’t appropriate that Red Nose Day puts the focus on fundraising by “having a great Zme and goofing around with a big red nose on” when so many of those needing help are facing such serious and unpleasant situaZons. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your opinion. READING SKILL-Develop opinions and provide jusZficaZons for view points Possible answer Agree • It is just an excuse for people to be silly for a day. They have fun raising a bit of money so that they can feel good about themselves and then they just forget about the worthy causes again. • The celebriZes just use Red Nose Day in order to raise their profiles. • Young people are so excited about all of the fun acZviZes at their school that they don’t think about the serious message behind the day. • Lots of people watch the fun television show aired by the BBC but don’t bother to donate. Disagree • Red Nose Day is very successful and has raised a lot of money for worthy causes. Whilst many chariZes have floundered in recent years, Red Nose Day has conZnued to be popular and over £1 billion has been raised since the first Red Nose Day. This is an incredible achievement. Therefore, as long as the money is helping the vulnerable, surely it doesn’t mader if people have fun whilst raising it? Indeed the element of fun is probably why so many people choose to support this charity in the first place. • Many of the celebriZes involved are already very high-profile. Ed Sheeran, for example, has got more than one single in the top ten at the moment. He doesn’t need Red Nose Day to raise his profile and yet he recently sang with children on the streets of Liberia in West Africa in order to show his support for Red Nose Day. Therefore the people who make such comments about the celebriZes involved are being cynical. • Laughter is said to be the best medicine. You can o\en find pictures of children trying to play even in the most war-torn communiZes. Fun and “goofing around” is synonymous with hope and therefore it is appropriate that Red Nose Day focuses on that. • Although people are encouraged to have fun whilst raising money for Red Nose Day there is sZll a focus on the serious charity work needing to be supported both in the UK and around the world. Throughout the BBC programme there are frequent clips in order to raise awareness.
