USAC permit 2017 1245

On April 30, 2017, I will be directing an amateur “rules of the road” cycling event through the Angeles National Forest, Upland, Azusa, and Glendora. Riders participating in L’Étape du California will cover the same route as the professionals on Stage 5 of the Amgen Tour of California on May 18, 2017. The route is breathtaking in its beauty and difficulty, covering some of the most famous and iconic sections of road in the San Gabriel mountains: Glendora Mountain Road, Glendora Ridge Road, and the sharp switchbacks up to the Mt Baldy Ski Area. By the time riders finish and return their cars in Upland, they will have climbed close to 11,000 vertical feet and ridden close to 100 miles. While the ride will use the same route through the Angeles National Forest, this is a very different event than is planned for the Amgen Tour of California on May 18th. It is expected that 600 riders will begin the ride at 7:30am in Upland. They will depart in waves of riders over a 15-minute period. Once the riders begin the climb up Mt Baldy Road, you can expect the riders to string out and ride single file. CHP will be monitoring the ride to make sure the riders are riding single file and obeying all traffic laws. There will be no road closures. In support of the riders, there will be Rest Stops and Water Stops along the route where riders can find food and liquids, along with medical and mechanical support. Each of these stops will have toilet and refuse facilities. We will also have roving mechanical support cars and vans that have the ability to provide food, water, and rides for people who cannot continue the event. We will not allow riders to have personal cars following them on the route. We will also have signage along the route that advises motorists that there is a bicycle event on the road and that they should exercise caution. AMR will be providing full medical support for the ride. This is a non-timed and “rules of the road” fun event. All riders will be given a safety talk before they depart.
