Reiman Gardens 2017 Washed Ashore

ART TO SAVE THE SEA Located at the entrance to Iowa State University, Reiman Gardens offers 17 acres of beautiful outdoor gardens, a tropical indoor conservatory, and a butterfly wing with hundreds of live, exotic butterflies. The mission of Reiman Gardens is to educate, enchant, and inspire an appreciation of plants, butterflies and the beauty of the natural world. THE EXHIBIT Washed Ashore will be the major annual exhibit for Reiman Gardens in 2017, coinciding perfectly with the Gardens' annual theme of "water." Reiman Gardens will feature 10, giant sea life sculptures made from trash collected from beaches to graphically illustrate the tragedy of plastic pollution in our oceans and waterways. Sculptures are up to 12 feet tall and 15 feet long. The exhibit will run May 1 – Oct. 31, 2017. IMPACT Marine debris is a planet-wide problem. Approximately 300 million pounds of plastic is produced globally each year and less than 10% of that is recycled. Much of it ends up in the ocean. This exhibit is a wake-up call for all of us, whether we live near the ocean or in the heart of the Midwest. We are all affected by water pollution, not only from trash that is thrown into the oceans, but also into our own Iowa rivers and streams.

Over the last five years, thousands of volunteers have collected more than 17 tons of marine debris, which has been made into over 66 Washed Ashore sculptures. These works of art help educate the public about the dangers this trash poses to our oceans, beaches and marine creatures.
