Leveraging Partnerships/Relationships We all have the same goal: We want to make sure those we serve achieve and sustain safe, affordable stable housing while also staying healthy. Housing providers need more MH/SA info and support and MH/SA providers need info about and access to housing for those they serve How do we help people achieve this?
Partnerships & Relationships
Know who your local MH/SA providers are; Which providers do some of your tenants already work with? ◦ Who has a good reputation for working with persons experiencing homelessness? ◦ Who specializes in sub-populations (TAY, families, etc.)
Offer to provide education to their clinical staff about your housing programs Ask them to provide education about their programming (to you & tenants)
Partnerships & Relationships
Work together to discover the unmet need/barriers both agencies have/that tenants have; common ground creates a starting point for collaboration ◦ Identify common (or not ) philosophies (housing first, harm reduction)
Collaborate on funding opportunities/grants/models that combine/bridge housing and services ◦ Dedicated “onsite” staff hours &/or programming from the MH/SA provider to persons in your housing ◦ “Preferred” MH/SA provider relationship ◦ MH/SA providers’ services can serve as “match/leverage dollars” for your HUD grants ◦ Foundations/private donors with even small contributions
Partnerships & Relationships
MH/SA providers may have resources/connections you are unaware of
◦ Federal grants that provide homeless outreach and referral (SAMHSA--PATH, CAHBI) ◦ Local program models focusing on persons experiencing homelessness (ACT) ◦ McKinney Vento Liaisons in your communities/schools ◦ MH/SA providers that are FQHCs that provide primary care—one stop services ◦ LGBTQ service/support organizations ◦ MH/SA providers have connections and contracts with DCS and housing providers can also have a role at the table. ◦ Innovations with Managed Care Entities/Organizations
Partnerships & Relationships
Continuum of Care (COC) ◦ Having representation on COC subcommittees that focus on services, especially to youth and families ◦ Getting the right people in the room together regularly
