Remembering Family By Stephen N. Mathieu
Jean and I recently attended the funerals of two inspiring men in our family. Uncle Jim Rulman and Uncle Norman Mathieu died within days of one another in Maine. The two men were brothers-in-law, and husband, dad, grandfather and friend to many more. They were men strong in their faith and devoted to their families and country. Uncle Jim joined the U. S. Air Force in 1951 and served in the Korean War, staying in the military for 21 years. Uncle Norman was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. We remember them thankfully for their service.

The funerals brought the families together twice in 2 weeks. Sadness overwhelmed us at times, laughter at other times. It was good to be together especially as we held Aunt Arlene’s hands and cried together. As we contemplate the loss of these family members, we James F. Rulman, can’t help but think of those already passed before. My father, Fire Chief, Westbrook ME Maurice Mathieu, who died in 1990 suddenly and unexpectedly, is one of those. I hope that my father was there to greet his brother and brother-in-law into the glories of heaven, and through this reconnection, my father will know how much we all love and miss him. Those left behind after death, the widows and extended family members, need our love and support. It is important to find and spend the time with family – there is never any guaranty that you will have tomorrow to make those plans. So make that call today! Love is the core of our life here on earth, and it is important to honor and love these people, our families, which are gifts from God.
