Biomass & The Renewable Heat Incentive

Seeing the Wood through the Trees

“This incentive is the first of its kind in

the world”.

It’ll help the UK shift away from fossil fuel, reducing carbon emissions and encouraging innovation, jobs and growth in new advanced technologies.”

(Secretary of State, Chris Huhne)

Wood - A Solid Fuel ?? • As heat applied, wood „de gases‟ giving a combustible mix of hydrocarbons. • It burns smokelessly provided it is – HOT – Intimately mixed with sufficient air – Usually Secondary Air 09/05/2008

Fuel Specification: CEN TC 335/CEN TS 14961 •For Chips –Moisture Content (M20, M30,M40,M55,M65) –Ash Content (A0.5/A1/A3/A6/A10). –Size (G20, G30,G50).

•For Pellet – –Moisture Content (M10)

–Ash Content (A1.5) –Size (D06 or D08) –Fines Content (F1.0) –Sulphur (S0.05) / 09/06/2009 / 1

Wood Pellets •Mostly Sawmill Co- Products. •Some from Managed/Cropped SRC •Moisture and Ash Content carefully controlled. •Homogenous Size. •To European Standards •More kJ/kg or kWh/m3 / 09/06/2009 / 1

•For Wood Chips –Moisture Content (M20,

M30,M40,M55,M65)

–Ash Content (A0.5/A1/A3/A6/A10). –Size (G20, G30,G50).

Where do I start?

/ 09/06/2009 / 1

Biomass Project Planning •Application –Seasonal Variation •Fuel ? –Source –Quality –Supplier/Delivery

•Site Constraints –Integrating Store & Boiler

/ 09/06/2009 / 1

How big should my fuel store be ? 1.How much space have YOU got ? 2.How much fuel are YOU going to burn running the boiler ? 3.How often do YOU want a delivery ? (or how much £ do YOU want to pay for the distribution element of delivered cost ?)

09/05/2008

Additional Tips • Locate Store as close as possible to Boiler. • First delivery is likely to be bigger than subsequent deliveries. • Vehicle Access - Close as possible. • Beware Dust nuisance ! • Load Cells or Level Probes needed ? • Remember Angles of Repose and potential dead space in bunker. 09/05/2008
