Report on the Fourth Annual INORE Symposium, Devon, UK May 2010 What is the symposium?
A five day residential that brings together early stage researchers for an intensive experience that provides an amazing catalyst for their research. The week included: •
Collaborative sessions set by industry experts; Garrad Hassan, Statkraft, Renewable UK, MARIN and RegenSW.
•
Presentations and posters from all 56 researchers attending
•
Keynote talks from Vattenfall, MARIN, NREL and many more
•
Site visit to PRIMaRE at the University of Exeter in Cornwall, a key research institute for WaveHub
•
Panel discussion with an array of experts
This year’s symposium took place in the bucolic surroundings of Dartmouth in Devon, UK. Fifty-six early stage reseachers from around the globe – mostly PhD students – attended the symposium, representing 31 institutions. This unique event, which is free of charge, brings together researchers to help achieve INORE’s goal of stimulating knowledge sharing, collaboration learning in a cohesive, global offshore renewable energy research community.

Rundown of the Week: The week long event started off on Sunday evening with attendees arriving from all over the UK, Europe, America and beyond. Meeting In Exeter, they piled into the coach and were on their way to the YHA Dart River, a Georgian manor situated above the picturesque river itself. The timetable proper began on Monday with an intense morning of quick-fire sessions where 1st /2nd year attendees presented a 5 minute overview of their work. After lunch, (and a brief poster session) groups were introduced to and began the collaborative projects. These projects saw the symposium split into 7 groups for 7 different industry set tasks. Each had a short brief and an outline of what was expected before having to prepare a 10 minute presentation for the Wednesday final showing. Although challenging and no-doubt frustrating, our enthusiastic INOREans stepped up to the task and MONDAY 10th TUESDAY 11th WEDNESDAY 12th THURSDAY 13th FRI. 14th Breakfast by 5pm had to be Breakfast Breakfast Breakfast Breakfast almost pulled out of Bus QUICK FIRE's QUICK FIRE's 1 Parallel Sessions 1: WEC Modelling: 7 the building so that from YHA QUICK FIRE's Bus to Tremough they could enjoy in QUICK FIRE's 2 Parallel Sessions 2: Tidal Modelling 8 QUICK FIRE's our local cultural QUICK FIRE's 3 Parallel Sessions 3: Future Tools 9 activity, a tour of the Coffee Break Coffee Break Coffee Break KEYNOTE 1: fine Bays Brewery. Tuesday saw the second set of quickfire’s with 3rd year+ and early researchers providing an educational sushi of knowledge to the symposia. This was followed by some insightful and knowledgeable speakers, (see the list above) giving their thoughts on all
International Network on Offshore and Renewable Energy inore.org sectors of the industry from academic research and commercial development to overarching policy mechanisms. Another couple of hours was also dedicated to the group tasks and the day was topped off with an open forum panel discussion in which our industry experts partook in a ‘round table’ discussion on the opportunities and bottlenecks showing within the field. By Wednesday, the event was a buzz of conversation over breakfast before people filed off into one of the three parallel sessions on wave, tidal and ‘other’ aspects. The specialised focus of 20 min presentations allowed for more depth with a 10 minute Q&A afterwards. Towards lunch, the groups were allowed a brief period to compile their work before the group presentations began. All presentations were given to the ‘question setters’ from industry (as well as the rest of the symposium) who provided feedback and discussion on the task and its outputs. Along with the posters, quick-fires, parallel session and keynote presentations, the group work shall be uploaded onto our website for members to see the cracking work that was done! Wednesday finished off with a posh treat of local cheese and wine to accompany an informal poster session where people could mingle and fully draw out the work of their peers before a brief respite for the new committee elections and then dinner. Thursday was designed as our ‘cool-off’ day and this is exactly what happened… The group coached their way down to Exeter University’s Tremough Campus in Cornwall and split into two. While half were given talks by the good people of PRIMaRE on the academic activities of Wave Hub and its valuable research, the others were taken to the north shores and treated to a surf lesson for all the hard work they’d put in. The weather was beautiful, the waves were great (not too big and with very little wind) and a great time was had by all. By Friday, an exhausted but happy throng were saying their farewells before slowly scattering off to their respective homes with an increased understanding of the sector and a new set of friends.

About INORE The International Network on Offshore Renewable Energy (INORE) is a fully autonomous organisation comprising over 420 members, 229 of which are full INOREans; PhD students and early stage industrial researchers from over 49 countries. This year INORE is building on its role as a networking organisation for early stage researchers and PhD students to offer more value from its community of members to the emerging industry of marine renewables.
