Research Paper Submission Procedures and Format Research papers are to be submitted in hard copy format. Your hard copy must be turned in by the scheduled due date. Late papers will be penalized. You are responsible for your hard copy being credited for turn in. Students will select topics from a designated topics list in conjunction with the professor who must approve all topics for research papers. I am willing to work with each student individually to insure they fully understand their paper/topic’s requirement(s). I encourage you to consult me or ask questions along the way. I will be glad to answer your questions and lend assistance wherever possible. Research papers will address the issues of orthodoxy vs. modern scholarship. The topic discussion must be centered upon both the pro and con perspectives (orthodox and modern views will provide the basis for these polemics). Additionally, your paper is required to have your personal evaluation/assessment and conclusion concerning your topic. Sources should include books and critical essays relating to the topic, i.e. books, appropriate magazines, professional philosophical, religious and sociological journals, etc, (this is not an exhaustive listing). At least two of the books are to be opposing commentaries. Students "will not" utilize any of the wiki sources found on the Internet. Students should make every effort to utilize fairly recent sources. You are required to consult at least nine (9) different sources, citing them within your paper in accordance with the “Kate Turabian” style manual's "foot notation" procedure. Your text book can count as one source where appropriate. At least two books must be from a local library--you must give the name and address of said library at the end of your reference for the book listed on the bibliography page. Internet sources will count as a combined source of one (1). That is, you will only get one source credit for all Internet references (confere with me on this matter when writing your paper). However, you must provide the bibliographic data for your sources along with the web site address, article title and date of internet access as a minimum, for each internet references used. The internet rule also applies to the usage of the Bible or other sacred religious material used as a reference—to include Bible/religious dictionaries. etc. Please be mindful of the College’s rule regarding plagiarism.

Research paper format: You will use Kate Turabian style manual format for research papers (see below). Research papers must be a minimum of the number of pages indicated in the syllabus, double spaced and shall not exceed 20 pages maximum. A cover sheet is required but will not be counted as part of the page length requirement. Each page is to consist of 300 to 350 words per page. A one inch minimum, or one and a quarter inch maximum, margin shall be utilized as your paper format. Font size "will be" Times New Romans, "12 point". Utilize proper quotation methods consistent with the style manual guidelines for Turabian. NOTE: If a quote is five or more lines the quote is to be properly indented and single spaced. Failure to follow this specific quoting procedure will have an adverse affect upon your paper's grade. Additionally, your bibliography will not be counted as part of your page length requirements but is required for papers. Kate Turabian Guidelines: A. 1.1 Margins Nearly all papers in the United States are produced on standard pages of 8 ½ x 11 inches. Leave a margin of at least one inch on all four edges of the page. Be sure that any material placed in headers or footers, including page numbers and other identifiers (see A. 1.4), falls within the margins specified in your local guidelines. A. 1.2 Typeface Choose a single, readable, and widely available typeface (also called font), such as Times New Roman, Courier, or Helvetica. If you use a less common typeface, you may need to embed the font in the electronic file. Avoid ornamental typefaces, which can distract readers and make your work seem less serious. (NOTE: for this course you will use Times New Roman, 12 point fonts only) A. 1.3 Spacing and Indentation Double-space all text in papers except the following items, which should be single-spaced: ■ block quotations (see 25.2.2) ■ table titles and figure captions ■ lists in appendixes The following items should be single-spaced internally but with a blank line between items: ■ footnotes

A. 1.4 Pagination A. 1.4.1 NUMBERING. If your only front matter is a title page, do not number that page. Number pages in the body of the paper and the back matter with arabic numerals, starting on the first page of text (page 2 - not counting the title page). Thus page 2 becomes Page 1. A. 1.4.2 PLACEMENT. Page numbers are usually placed in one of four locations: centered or flush right in the footer (at the bottom of the page) or centered or flush right in the header (at the top of the page). For class papers, choose one of these locations and follow it consistently. Use the header for this information. A. 1.4.3 OTHER IDENTIFIERS. In some settings you may be allowed or even encouraged to include identifying information besides the page number in the header or footer. For a class paper, your instructor may ask you to include your last name, the date of the paper. (NOTE: Student "will include this information in the header for each page in this course.) A. 1.5 Titles Depending on its complexity, your paper may consist of many elements, as listed in A. 2, and most of them should have a title. Use the same typeface, type size, and formatting (boldface, italic, etc.) for the titles of like elements. In general, and unless your local guidelines say otherwise, titles should appear in boldface. On the title page, center each element and use headline-style capitalization for all, including the title of your paper. Titles for the front and back matter are also typically centered, as are chapter number designations and chapter titles. For chapter titles, use headline-style capitalization unless your local guidelines specify sentence style. In a class paper, the front matter will probably be a single title page and the back matter just a bibliography or reference list. All such elements may be in a larger type size than the text of your paper. The back matter (bibliography) will not be center but follow Turabian guidelines. Check your local guidelines.
