Portico stands on the site of the first Scots Presbyterian Church in Sydney built between 1824 – 1826. The church was demolished in 1926 to make way for the widening of York Street as the southern approach to the harbour bridge. The present church incorporated into what is now the Portico and Scots Church restoration was built between 1929 - 1930. Portico was developed by Westpoint and designed by architects Tonkin Zulaikha Greer being completed in 2005. The restoration won a MBA excellence in Construction Award in 2006 for best restoration of a historic building up to $5 million. The restoration included a 12 storey addition above the newly restored Assembly Building and Scots Church incorporating 55 heritage apartments in the church structure and 96 contemporary apartments in the newly added Portico Tower. Portico apartments incorporate high ceilings, polished Jarrah timber floorboards and floor to ceiling windows, creating a sense of space and light in an apartment block in the heart of the city creating a New York loft style air.
