REVERB Games

August 20, 2014

“Building a Tower” Equipment Each group will need one bag of each type of marshmallows and a package of spaghetti. Objective Using only the materials provided the groups attempt to build the BEST structure as possible within time allowed. They may be creative in their construction methods. Rules •

Every student must participate.

There is a 15-minute limit.

Spiritual Application This is great for defining BEST. Most of us will compare ourselves to each other, our projects to another, and our Christian walks to another, however God simply ask for our BEST and that is not defined by looking at others. Our culture is big on comparison – it’s how they say we must define our worth.

Reverb – August 20 th , 2014 Core Values “Truth” 1 Timothy 3:14 – 16 Lesson Objective: After studying the listed and any related Scriptures, students will be able to layout a comprehensive description of the relationship between the passage and (1) the imperative nature of Scripture in the Church, (2) the innate truth of Scripture, and (3) the disparity between the relative “truth” of the world and the absolute truth of Scipture. Lesson Overview: I write these things to you, hoping to come to you soon. But if I should be delayed, I have written so that you will know how people ought to act in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. And most certainly, the mystery of godliness is great: He was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

The purpose statement of this passage is found in verse 15, in which we find Paul making a declarative statement about the “church of the living God”. He states that it should be a pillar and a foundation of the truth. That truth, he continues, is the Gospel of Jesus Christ (v. 16). Therefore, the church should be an unmoving pillar and a strong buttress in defense of the gospel. In saying so, Paul implies that there is one absolute truth of the world. Lesson Context: 1 Timothy is the first of two inspired letters Paul wrote to his beloved son in the faith.! When he revisited Lystra on his second missionary journey, Paul chose Timothy to accompany him (Acts 16:1–3). Although Timothy was very young (probably in his late teens or early twenties, since about fifteen years later Paul referred to him as a young man, 4:12), he had a reputation for godliness (Acts 16:2). Timothy was to be Paul’s disciple, friend, and colaborer for the rest of the apostle’s life, ministering with him in Berea (Acts 17:14), Athens (Acts 17:15), Corinth (Acts 18:5; 2 Cor. 1:19), and accompanying him on his trip to Jerusalem (Acts 20:4). Paul often sent Timothy to churches as his representative.! 3:14 – 16 mark a transition point between the positive instruction of the first three chapters and the warnings of the last three. They reveal the heart of the church’s mission (v. 15) and message (v. 16).

Lesson Discussion Jr. High

Relate •

Welcome & Review o A simple, brief time to greet one another and review the truths discussed in the last Color Group (see next section). Periodically, the leader will also want to ask about and discuss any decisions made so far made by a student. This could be formal decisions (as in salvation) or informal (as in praying each morning before getting out of bed).

Prayer

Direct Open discussion with this statement: “The game we just played is great for defining BEST”. Each leader should share a story about a time in which you were comparing yourself with someone else (preferably, a time in school – to relate). Most of us will compare ourselves to each other, our projects to another, and our Christian walks to another, however God simply ask for our BEST and that is not defined by looking at others. Our culture is big on comparison – it’s how they say we must define our worth. o Ask the students to think about someone they compare themselves to, then (1st) ask for volunteers or (2nd – if none) call on some to share who and why. – Pass out the pens and paper – Our culture sets a lot of rules for us like what to wear. Have each of the students draw a picture of a person wearing clothes that would be funny or awkward in our culture. Ask or call on students to share. If time permits, share all.

Our culture also tries to set rules on the Bible. One or both teachers share a story of a time someone told you that the Bible wasn’t true, or something likewise. Share that today, we will learn about why the Bible is absolutely true, and why it is important for us to study the Bible personally.

Close this time by praying for each other.

Group Questions (Pose the questions and instruct students to write down their answers on the provided paper) 1. What does this passage teach us about the attributes of God? 2. What is relativism and why is it contrary to the truth of Scripture? 3. What is pluralism and why is it contrary to the truth of Scripture? 4. Why is the church supposed to be a pillar and a buttress of the truth? 5. What actions does God want you to take according to the truths of this passage? 6. What is an action that you can start to implement this evening or tomorrow? 7. What is going to be the most difficult aspect of this passage to personally apply?

Close this time by praying for each other, specifically for the strength to apply these truths.
