Joss Whedon and first time director Drew Godard (Writer of Cloverfield) have set out to raise the bar within the horror genre while subverting its conventions with Cabin in the Woods and they have wholeheartedly succeeded as it’s a joy to behold. A response to the formulaic nature that horror falls into as a genre when it grows complacent, as often happens over time, Cabin in the Woods is one of the most interesting plays with what the medium is capable of delivering since

The plot to the film is standard, as the tag line reads – Kids go out to a cabin in the woods, bad things happen. Obviously, it isn’t quite that cut and dry. There is an extra dimension to the plot that adds layer upon layer of possibility and intrigue to the proceedings and lifts the story up instantly to classic status. This extra dimension also means that as well as the film being roaring good fun it also acts as a sly assessment and criticism of the genre of horror as a whole. Furthermore, and again without giving anything away to those that haven’t yet seen it, the sheer level of potential the films unique premise offers is fully explored as the film progresses with a truly astounding third act that thrills and terrifies in equal measure, to mention the offer of an

Its difficult to discuss what makes Cabin such a joy to watch without giving away its central premise and the twist that makes the standard convention interesting. That the film has its share of scary moments is unarguable buts its approach to them makes calling the film a horror movie seem in some ways reductive. There is a very knowing study and approach to their presence that gives the viewer a very meta-fictional attitude to the scares that, while not desensitizing from the shock value of things jumping out at people and violent deaths, gives the viewer a sense of removement from proceedings as they watch the film. Although it is hardly aimed at a similar age group you could argue that Cabin would appeal to the same audience, abet grown up, as Ghostbusters. It has the same sort of unique, fun approach to its subject with the same feel of confidence with itself in terms of what it’s doing as a movie. Cabin in the woods doesn’t offer as many memorable characters as Ghostbusters does, in fact some of the characterization is its biggest flaw while at the same time being a vital asset to the films narrative, but it holds its share of similar iconic moments and its overriding sense of fun. Its flaws as a film are, ironically enough, what also makes it work so well as a movie. The fact that it plays on standard conventions and riffs with the ideas so thoroughly inevitably means that while playing with genre tropes it must also adhere to them for such subversivness to work and so at points SOME of the characterization can be flat but when seen in the context of the film this is vital to what makes it all work. Cabin in the woods is not the greatest horror film of recent years. It is, however, the greatest comment on horror films arguably ever made which is a far higher accolade in the totality of cinematic canon. And even if it isn’t THE BEST, its still one of them.
