Revisit Your Happy Place EACH OF US HAS A HAPPY PLACE TUCKED AWAY IN OUR MEMORIES. For me, one such place is a Victorian villa in Oxford, England, a five minutes’ walk up Park Street from Keble College’s Neo-Gothic spires. Built in the mid-1800s to house dons and their families, the homes north of the college represent residential Neo-Gothic at its best: lofty red-brick façades with white stone turrets and tracery windows. Behind those windows lived about 30 students, with whom I not only shared a house, but a problem: How would I ever leave my Victorian home away from home? Like Sebastian Flyte in Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited, I felt that, “I should like to bury something precious in every place where I’ve been happy and then…I could come back and dig it up and remember.” It’s a common experience. Legendary authors Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edith Wharton shared this sentiment about their respective Massachusetts homes. During a spell abroad, Hawthorne missed his home so much that he shipped a load of saplings across the Atlantic to be planted in his yard—trees that still stand today (see page 61). Similarly, after leaving The Mount in 1911, Wharton felt herself forever under its “blessed influence” (see pages 50-57). Perhaps you’ve felt the same. Like Hawthorne and Wharton, you feel encompassed by the cares of home even when far away. Maybe, like two homeowners in this issue, you’ve wandered so far from home that you’ve circled back to your front door (see pages 22-41). Or possibly the Victorian home you love is a respectfully restored bed-and-breakfast in a historic town (see pages 58-63). No matter where you’ve buried happy memories, consider returning this summer, digging them up and remembering. Like the old homes we love, the “blessed influence” of those memories is worth preserving.

Cheers,
