Richard James Comer Legacy Scholarship
September 25, 2017 Attention Graduating Seniors, The family of Mr. Richard James Comer chooses to honor his legacy by awarding $500 scholarships to eight (8) seniors from East Chicago Central High School. You will have an opportunity to apply for this one-time award in remembrance of the Comer family’s loved one. The recipient must apply the scholarship award towards college costs and expenses at an accredited college, university, or vocational/technical school. Mr. Comer relocated to Gary, Indiana as a child where he became a lifetime resident. A graduate of Froebel High School’s Class of 1948, he joined the U.S. Army upon commencement. A lifelong learner, Mr. Comer attended Purdue University and Indiana University-NW, receiving both his Bachelors of Science and Master's in Public Administration. Mr. Richard James Comer committed his life to enhancing, educating and empowering others while encouraging young professionals to bring their talents home as well as to continue to learn their history. The criterion for the scholarship is as follows: To be eligible to apply applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to community service; must display leadership abilities in school activities or through work experience and must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher to be considered; no exceptions will be made. Two (2) letters of recommendation from high school teachers must accompany your application. Include a copy of your transcript. Complete the attached personal data form. At minimum, a 500 word essay must be typed in 12 FONT and double spaced. Submit your completed application to the Guidance Office no later than November 30, 2017. Your essay must cover one of the following prompts: 1. How can I give back to my community after graduating college? 2. Why is furthering my education beyond high school important? 3. What challenges have I faced and how did/am I currently overcoming them in order to reach my full potential to become a better citizen for my community and our society as a whole?
