Rigs to Reefs CCA applauds Louisiana senator for effort to avert rig removals
HOUSTON, TX Coastal Conservation Association is applauding Sen. David Vitter (RLa) for legislation filed today that will prevent rigs and other structures from being summarily removed from the Gulf of Mexico. In a kneejerk response to the Gulf oil spill, the U.S. Department of Interior issued a directive in October of 2010 ordering that all nonproducing rigs be plugged and any remaining structure removed within five years of the issuance of that directive. Sen. Vitter’s Rigs to Reefs Habitat Protection Act of 2011 seeks to allow those structures to remain in the Gulf as vibrant artificial reefs.

TERREBONNE PARISH, LA – CCA’s Building Conservation Habitat Program, in partnership with Shell Oil Company, Terrebonne Parish Government, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, America’s Wetlands, Entergy and Enterprise Products, will launch a restoration project later this month to rebuild part of the coastline in Terrebonne Parish utilizing the unique “Floating Islands” product.
MOBILE, AL – CCA Alabama and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Marine Resources Division, have announced a partnership to complete the massive Bayou Cour Reef in Bon Secour Bay.

Center founder Jack Lawton receives national honor for promoting recreational fishing NEW ORLEANS – The American Sportfishing Association has awarded its prestigious Future of Fishing Award to Center for Coastal Conservation Founding Chairman Jack Lawton Jr. for his work nurturing and growing recreational fishing over the past three decades. ASA presented Lawton the award Oct. 14 at its annual conference in New Orleans.

Louisiana Cypremort Point Pavilion at Quintana Landing dedicated The dedication of the Cypremort Point Pavilion at Quitana Landing was dedicated in midAugust. The facility was originally the vision of the Sugar CCA Chapter, whose members worked with State Representatives Simone Champagne and Sam Jones, as well as St. Mary and Iberia parish officials, to make it a reality. The pavilion, which is an 80by40foot structure, will provide a place to hold fishing tournaments or host youth events. "This will be a great addition to our facility here at Quintana, and it is long overdue," said St. Mary Parish President Don Naquin. "We are so thankful to CCA Louisiana for stepping up to the plate."

CCA Maryland experienced a partial victory in late summer as the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced new regulations for the upcoming commercial gill net season beginning Dec. 1.

In the last edition of TIDE, CCA NY noted that the state legislature had passed a bill that would prohibit the commercial harvest of striped bass from the Hudson River until at least April 2015. On Aug. 18, Governor Cuomo signed that bill into law.
CCA NC continued its long standing support of the South Brunswick High School Aquaculture Program with a $1,500 donation.

Topwater Action Campaign adds more oyster capability With the recent support of Palmetto Moon, LLC of Mt. Pleasant and The Guy Harvey Foundation, TWA was able to extend its oyster recycling capabilities with a new trailer that will be used in the organization’s oyster

In addition to the trailer, CCA SC worked with WesKay LLC of Florence, to locate and build a suitable oyster shell recycling dropoff site to serve the surrounding area. “As an avid recreational angler and CCA SC state board member I can testify first hand to the work this program (TWA) is making in the improvements for anglers,” said WesKay LLC spokesperson Jay Thompson. www.ccasouthcarolina.com

1 threepound whole flounder (cleaned, gutted and scaled) 1 stick butter, melted Salt, pepper, cayenne
Directions Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. In a saute pan, heat the olive oil and tablespoon butter. When the oil is hot, add the onions, celery, peppers, and garlic. Season to taste. Saute for about 4 minutes, or until the vegetables are wilted. Add the shrimp. Cook for 2 minutes or until cooked through. Turn the mixture into a bowl. Stir in the bread crumbs and cheese. Season with salt, pepper and cayenne to taste. Set stuffing aside to cool. Season the fish with salt and pepper. Fill the cavity with the cooled stuffing. Fold the flaps over the stuffing. Place the fish on a lined baking sheet. Drizzle the fish with the melted butter. Place the pan in the oven and bake the fish for 20 to 25 minutes. Remove the fish from the oven and serve.
