Rising Fourth Grade Summer Reading
Dear Upcoming Fourth Graders, As a rising 4th grade student, we would like for all of you to read The American Jungle:
Adventures of Charlie Pierce, by Harvey E. Oyer III. This book is the first in a series of three, and it is based on actual people, places, and events on the south Florida frontier during the late 19th century. In fourth grade we study Florida throughout the year and this is a great jumpstart to your learning. While you read this book, we would like for you to complete a few activities. Be sure you read the directions carefully on each page of the packet before you begin. We will collect these activities the first week of school. In addition to The American Jungle: Adventures of Charlie Pierce, we would like you to choose one of the Sunshine State Books off the current list. Upon your return to school in August, we will meet in groups to complete a project based on the book that you have chosen. We are excited to meet you and jump right in to our new year together. Activity One: Vocabulary – Choose ten words from the novel that you were unfamiliar with. Define them and include the part of speech for each.
Use a sheet of lined notebook paper to complete this activity. Remember to write the vocabulary, definitions, and parts of speech.
Activity Two: Venn Diagram – Compare yourself to a character in the book. Think about appearance, personality, behavior, and interests. Write your name on one circle and the character’s name on the other. In the center space, where the two circles meet, write words that describe the both of you. In the remaining space in each circle, write words that describe only your or your character.
Use the attached Venn diagram template to complete this activity.
Activity Three: Summarize - Choose one chapter that you found interesting or had a connection with. Write a summary about that chapter using descriptive words.
Use a sheet of lined notebook paper to complete this activity.
Activity Four: Sequel Book Cover – Create a title and illustrated book cover for a sequel to The American Jungle. Remember to color your illustration.
Use the attached book cover template to complete this activity.
Activity Five: Book Review/Recommendation – Write what you would say to convince a friend to read this book. Think about how you felt about the story and characters. Include some of the highlights you remember most about this novel.
