The Colonials then take on Coppin Staate on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. before finishing tourament play with host Duquesne at 6 p.m. SCOUTING NORTHERN KENTUCKY

Northern Kentucky (0-0) opens its 2017 season against Robert Morris. This will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools. NKU was scheduled to open its season last weekend at the Barcelona HBU Classic in Houston. The tournament was cancelled due to the impact of Hurricane Harvey, which brought historic and widespread flooding throughout the Houston area. SCOUTING CANISIUS

The Griffins enter play this weekend with a 1-2 record after opening the season at the Buffalo Invitational. RMU holds an 8-9 mark all-time against Canisius. The teams last met Sept. 10, 2010 as the Griffins earned a 3-0 win. SCOUTING COPPIN STATE

The Lady Eagles come into the weekend with an 0-3 record after opening the season at the Crosstown Invite. Robert Morris and Coppin State meet for the eighth time with the Colonials holding a perfect 7-0 mark. RMU and CSU last met in 2007. SCOUTING DUQUESNE

Duquesne enters play this weekend at 0-3 after competing in the Hampton Inn Invitational. The Dukes and Colonials will meet for the 40th time with Duquesne holding a 30-9 edge in the series. The Dukes knocked off the Colonials 3-0 last season. ABOUT ROBERT MORRIS

The Colonials were predicted to finish in fith-place in the 2017 NEC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. RMU missed qualifying for its 18th consecutive NEC Tournament by just one game last season. In each of the last 18 seasons, the Colonials have posted a winning record in league competition, which stands as the longest such streak of any NEC member, past or present.

MUSKET SHOTS LORD OF THE DANCE Against Youngstown State, junior outside hitter Taylor Lord matched her career-high with 21 kills while hitting at a .314 clip. She added 23 digs to tally her second double-double of the season. Her 23 digs also marked the eighth time in her career that she totaled 20-plus digs in a single match. She currently ranks eighth in the NEC with 3.65 digs/set. ACING THE COMPETITION Robert Morris currently leads the league and the country with 38 service aces. The Colonials have five more aces than Fordham, which ranks second nationally. Individually, RMU has two players in the top 30 in the nation in total aces. Freshman middle blocker Emma Granger ranks 10th with nine aces while classmate Alyson Londot is 27th with seven aces. RMU is the only school in the NEC to have two players rank among the top 30 individually in aces. Sacred Heart’s Cassandra Lew is tied with Londot. CAN YOU DIG IT RMU leads the NEC and ranks second in the country with 349 digs (16.62/set). The Colonials also rank among the nation’s best in team assists (234 - first) and team kills (243 - second). GRANGER LAUDED AS NEC PRIME PERFORMER Emma Granger was honored as an NEC Prime Performer for her exploits during the opening weekend of the season at the Butler Bulldog Brawl. She was named to the All-Tournament team after she hit at a .352 clip in 14 sets. She also averaged 3.21 kills per set while tallying 13-plus kills in three of four matches. She hit .500 with 15 kills against Stony Brook. Granger hit .346 with 13 kills against Oakland. WELCOME FRESHMAN Head coach Dale Starr welcomes eight freshmen to the team in 2017 including Maria Alfano, Caroline Bain, Whitney Brown, Skylar Clements, Emma Granger, Alyson Londot, Mirna Sarjanovic and Erika Wilt. This matches the 2014 squad for the most freshmen on a Dale Starr coached Colonial team. The previous high was six back in 2015. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED The Colonials will have to find a way to replace the production of four-time All-NEC honoree Arden Fisher. Fisher became just the third RMU player in program history to earn All-NEC honors all four years of her career. Fisher was a second-team honoree her first three years before earning first-team laurels in 2016. She became the first volleyball player in in RMU history to record 1,000-plus career kills (1,246) and 1,500-plus career digs (1,852). Her 598 digs last season ranks second in the individual single-season records. She also finished her career ranked second in career digs and fifth in career kills. A HISTORIC RUN Robert Morris recorded its 18th consecutive winning record in NEC play. By doing so, the Colonials extended the longest such streak of any NEC member, past or present. Over that timespan, RMU has gone 162-42 in conference play: 1999: 9-0 2004: 8-0 2009: 11-5 2014: 12-2 2000: 8-1 2005: 7-1 2010: 13-3 2015: 11-3 2001: 8-1 2006: 5-3 2011: 10-6 2016: 8-6 2002: 9-0 2007: 6-2 2012: 13-3 2003: 8-0 2008: 8-0 2013: 8-6

RMU’s recent success is due in part to a dominant team blocking effort, an area which Starr completely overhauled in his first season with the program. As a result, the Colonials have ranked third or better in the Northeast Conference in team blocking in six of Starr’s seven seasons at the helm. Starr has continued the proud tradition of RMU volleyball. He has guided the Colonials to a 75-29 mark in league play and has defeated every team in the conference at least four times. In 2016 RMU tallied an 8-6 mark in NEC play and finished with a winning conference record for the 18th consecutive season, extending the longest such streak of any NEC member, past or present. Under Starr’s guidance, the Colonials ranked in the top three in the NEC in six categories. Starr led the Colonials to their eighth NEC Tournament title in 2015, the first in six appearances with Starr at the helm. Robert Morris defeated three-time defending NEC champion LIU Brooklyn on its home court in an epic 3-1 comeback after RMU dropped set one. Robert Morris received an automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Tournament, where the Colonials fell to Ohio State in the First Round. Robert Morris’ 19 wins in 2015 are the most achieved in a season under Starr.

In 2014, Starr saw his team compile its best conference record (12-2) during his tenure. He led the Colonials to their first NEC Tournament title match since 2010 and had three student-athletes earn All-NEC accolades – a season best under his direction. RMU paced the league in blocks, averaging 2.41 per set and 2.92 in conference matches. The Colonials also finished second in digs, opponent hitting percentage, and hitting percentage. Starr guided the 2013 RMU team to its 15th-consecutive NEC Tournament berth, finishing the conference slate with an 8-6 record. The Colonials led the conference in digs and Starr had a student-athlete make an All-NEC team for the fourth straight season. On Oct. 19, Starr earned his 200th career win with a three-set sweep of St. Francis (Pa.). With a senior-heavy roster in 2012, Starr led the Colonials to their 14thconsecutive NEC Tournament behind the strength of 13 regular-season wins against NEC foes. Despite a slow start in early-season tournaments, Starr led RMU to a thrilling five-set victory over West Virginia, the first victory over a Big-XII team in program history. Two members of Starr’s 2012 squad would earn All-NEC honors for the second consecutive season. Academically, the team won the conference’s Team GPA award for the second-straight academic year, as the mark of 3.65 doubled as the highest mark among all of RMU’s athletic programs. The highlight of the 2011 season under Starr had to be the three-set sweep of crosstown-rival Pittsburgh. The win was the first victory over the Panthers in program history. In his first season with Robert Morris, two of Starr’s student-athletes claimed first team all-conference honors in 2010 and a total of four claimed weekly honors from the NEC. Starr guided his squad to a victory over then six-time defending NEC champion LIU-Brooklyn in the conference tournament semifinals. After eliminating the Blackbirds in a thrilling, five-set match, RMU then competed in its 13th league championship match, extending its own conference record.
