On Dec. 13, 1643, Sachem Tackapousha and six other Native American chiefs sold a large tract of land to the Englishmen for all of what is now known as Nassau County. Just before the 20th century, Rockville Centre built a strong foundation for its town. In 1872, a Union Free School district was established, 10 years later a post office was founded, followed by Municipal Water District, in 1895; a Municipal Electric District, in 1898; and New York Telephone Company, in 1906. Rockville Centre is now known as a great place to live, work and raise a family. The community is approximately 3.3 miles, with 400 retail and service shops and more than 150 acres of parks, ballfields and playgrounds. Most importantly, the town has one of the best schools systems on all of Long Island. South Side High School ranked 46 in the top 100 schools in the nation, and the town sends more than 96 percent of its students to top schools in the U.S. Rockville Centre is also home to Molloy College, which is consistently recognized by national publications as a leading institution in the region.
