Nov 21st 2015 - ‫ט' כסלו תשע"ו‬ Shabbat Shalom to all our members and guests!

Shaarei Tefillah is the destination for families and individuals from diverse Jewish backgrounds who share a common desire for strong Jewish values, relevant inspiration, personal growth and a warm welcoming community! Last Shabbat, I came into shul excited to share a beautiful idea relating to a simcha that we were celebrating in our STC community, namely our newest member being born and named. But as I entered the shul, I was informed by a few of our members of the horrific massacres that had unfolded throughout Friday night in Paris. I was shattered. Dumbfounded. Silenced.

November 28th // 16th of Kislev PARSHAT VAYISHLACH FRIDAY NIGHT

Then I was faced with the question of what to speak about for my few moments on the soap box. On one hand, Judaism is a religion of life, as the Torah tells us: "V’chai Bahem"- you should live with the mitzvot (thus implying that dying is not a mitzvah). We celebrate life in general, all the more so the creation of a new life and a new soul being brought into this world. Yet, on the other hand, we are a people that do not live in a vacuum, but rather acknowledge, feel, and respond to tragedy when it occurs or exists. To do anything less than that is not human and it is simply not the Jewish way. We see this balance of joy tempered by sorrow often in our Jewish lives. No celebration of a wedding is without pause for the smashing of the glass, recognizing that all is not perfect in the world without a Beit Hamikdash and G-d's tangible presence among us. Every Yom Ha’atzmaut is preceded by a Yom Hazikaron. And so too here, we do not shut out the world in order to go on with our lives as if nothing has occurred. It is a fine balance, and often a struggle…but that is what it means to be a Jew. It is finding that right balance to respect, to celebrate, and even more so to forge on even stronger and resolute in our mission “L’takeyn olam b’malchut Shakai” – to fix the world through our commitment to God’s will. This is a mission that is exemplified by a beautiful tapestry of law that mends a broken world, not one that shatters it. And to do so, we can take a page out of the books of our enemies. Other religions have taken possession of the concept of “indoctrination”, and we therefore view indoctrination as an evil. However, the dictionary definition of the word "indoctrinate" is: to instruct in a doctrine, principle, ideology, etc., especially to imbue with a specific partisan or biased belief or point of view. As such, we might learn to navigate the balance using indoctrination in a healthy, productive way. We Jews should cry tears of pain for lives lost, but at the same time, reaffirm and strengthen our resolve to indoctrinate. We too should indoctrinate our children, and do so from a young age – in fact from birth – with the values that bring more holiness and kindness into their lives and through that into the lives of those around them. We need to, from the first second they are born, not just bless them with a life of “Torah, Chuppah, and Maasim Tovim” – but to “indoctrinate them” to live those lives meaningfully and spread that message.

SHABBAT DAY

As we get closer to Chanukah, we remember a fight that needed to be fought... never at the expense of our values, but to defend those values that we hold dear. And with the help of G-d, may the light that shines forth from us as we battle to defend our values, expel the darkness that exists in this world.

Rabbi Rafi Rabbi Shmuli Soroka, Executive Director

PARSHAT VAYETZE – ‫( פרשת ויצא‬Pages 144-168) And Yaakov awakened out of his sleep, and he said: “Surely Hashem is in this place” (Genesis 28:16) These were the first words that Yaakov spoke upon awakening from his dream of the ladder. Our Rabbis tell us that no vision in life will ever come to successful fruition unless we can say: “Surely Hashem is in this place” (Panim Yafot). As we dream our dreams, and as we are granted our visions, we must be aware of the Divine Forces in the universe which inspire and compel us to live a fully human life. Just as Yaakov was always seeking to cultivate the highest in himself, so we must develop our fullest potentialities.
