the very best in members’ clubs. This approach is clearly working, as the place was full until midnight with guests, many of whom had then tipsily reclined on leather sofas and were transfixed by the floor-to-ceiling views of Canada Square Park. The space, above Waitrose and next to the Reebok Sports Club, is open-plan with the bar spilling into the restaurant in a way that generates fluidity throughout the evening. Better still, pot plants and shelves are strategically placed to create little nooks of privacy throughout the floor. A bespoke cocktail to start is a must. The sophisticated Fifties inspired selection vividly complements the food; the floral notes sweetened by a dash of hibiscus flower syrup in the purple Hibiscus Mojito is a particular house success. The eclectic menu is wonderful – fresh, vibrant and unpretentious. The mains range from superb rib-eye steak to comforting specialrecipe mac’n’cheese. Top tip – order a round of cocktails and starters to share as the octopus salad tossed in smoked paprika, spicy diver scallops cooled by artichoke purée and sesame seed chicken wings warrant a taste each. Book as soon as you can, and make friends with the receptionist too, before regulars make this room a home. 16-19 Canada Square, thepearsonroom.co.uk
