Room with a View

Mesa View Suite 18, Amangiri (Canyon Point, Utah) There are 34 suites; rates start at $1,100. Mesa View Suite 18 starts at $1,250 (435-675-3999).

Fade In: Our scene opens at Utah’s Amangiri, hidden among the sandstone cliffs in a landscape plucked from a John Ford fantasy. Relaxing in one of these low-slung loungers, you can easily imagine a long tracking shot across the mesas and the sagebrush-dotted terrain of the American Southwest (the view is equally striking from your suite’s king-size platform bed). Geologists here will guide you on treks over the surrounding grounds, which are laced with petroglyphs and slot canyons. You could head two and a half hours east or west—to Monument Valley or the Grand Canyon, respectively—for more of America’s iconic geology, not to say mythology. But with a close-up view like this one from your own private digs, why go anywhere else?

Lake Powell is a short drive to the northeast, beyond these mesas. Monument Valley, the filming location for John Ford’s The Searchers and other classic Westerns, is farther east.

Amangiri’s bedrooms are spare, but each has a wall of windows that opens up completely to the desertscape. Mesa View suites, like this one, are closest to the rock formations.
