Today is the day...the day for fine food. With over 1,102 entries (that’s 14% more than last year), the judging for the Royal Melbourne Fine Food Awards (RMFFA) Spring Program kicks off today and it’s set to be an impressive fifteen days of celebrating excellence in Australia’s food and produce industries. The RMFFA judging is a far cry from the bake-offs at your local country show. Thirty-seven judges compose a panel of highly respected industry and category experts, leading food media, and food technologists; all of whom have been selected for their tasting accuracy and ability to concentrate. The judges reside over ten categories, assessing each product on its own merit. They judge blind against a set of criteria and provide feedback on each item assessed. It’s an intense time rich in flavour, texture, and subtle undertones. The categories for this year’s panel are: Branded Beef; Branded Lamb; Dairy; Sheep, Goat and Buffalo; Ice Cream, Gelato and Sorbet; Delicatessen (featuring Dips, Tapenade, Smallgoods and Uncooked Sausage); Extra Virgin Olive Oils and Flavoured Oils; Bread and Baked Goods; Free Range Eggs; Sweet and Savoury Preserves (featuring Jams, Vinegars and Dressings). Judging the RMFFA is more like competing in a food-marathon, than in a casual taste-test. To allow the panel to profile each product accurately (and to provide a few days of rest in between so their palates can be revived), the categories have been broken down, coupling complimentary products, to be tasted from June 25th to August 23rd 2014. Renowned baker and providore, Phillippa Grogan (of Phillippa’s) has confirmed the taxing nature of judging, but notes that it’s enough fun to see her returning as a judge for the fourth year in a row! The awards, according to Phillippa, provide important recognition of the efforts and quality coming out of Australian producers—it encourages retailers to consider award winning products from the RMFFA when sourcing new goods for their shelves. And she’s not wrong. The Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals and, ultimately, the coveted thirty-eight trophies awarded to entrants in this year’s Spring program are not awards to be taken lightly. The RMFFA present a valuable opportunity for large and small producers to establish their credentials in the fine food industry and benchmark their products. Not only will winners be given the opportunity to partake in an exclusive Buyer’s Tasting in late August, they’ll also be featured in the Tastes of Victoria pavilion at the Royal Melbourne Show’s Fine Food Deli. Ultimately, the winners of the RMFFA will be highlighted as the best Australian fine food producers, to both wholesale and individual consumers nation-wide—a definite career booster!

Matthew Wilkinson (RMFFA Industry Advisory Group representative, chef and owner of Pope Joan and Hams and Bacon) says that not only do the RMFFA provide a jumping base for upcoming small to medium businesses, but they also act as a good indication of the direction that the Australian food industry is taking. “I’m excited to see how [the producers] all stack up,” Wilkinson states, noting that there has been particularly strong growth in entries in the categories of Branded Beef, Delicatessen, and Preserves. “[It] says a lot for the growing interest and demand for these specialty foods.” So with fine foods on the rise in Australia, it’ll be interesting to see who is deemed the finest in this national

contest. As always, judges will be on the lookout for the best quality produce available—there’ll be no bias, just good old fashioned, critical eating. Unfortunately for us, the official Awards Presentation isn’t until 22nd of September, and we won’t be tasting any of the spoils until the Royal Melbourne Show. So until then, the best we can do is wish the judges (and the entrants) the best of luck over the next few months...and there’s always last year’s recipients (available at www.rasv.com.au/finefoods), if you just can’t wait. Let the judging begin! Australia
