My name is Daulton Redmond and I have the very proud privilege of being appointed as the new Principal of the RSA Academy, from August 2013. Many of you will know me in my role as Vice Principal, Maths, Science and Technology which I have held for the last five years and, since January 2013, in the role of Executive Vice Principal, while Mrs Weale took the interim role of Principal. Before joining the Academy, I was Assistant Head and Deputy at a school in Stoke-on-Trent and, prior to that, amongst other positions have worked in educational and advisory roles in Manchester, Birmingham and Valencia, in Spain. I am married and have two daughters aged 7 and 9. For my sins, I am a season ticket holder at Stoke City! Since joining the Academy, I have seen significant changes in our students’ attitudes to school life and their aspirations. As you will be aware, results have risen and the number of students who leave us and go on to university or high quality work-based training has increased dramatically. These are things that we are very proud of and we will continue to ensure that they improve. I believe that all young people have a right to a high quality education and to achieve the best they possibly can. I also believe that we have a duty to spot talent and support its development to the best of our ability. To achieve this, we must work together to continue to improve our students’ attitudes and approaches to learning. It is my firm belief that this is only done through true partnership between the Academy, you as parents or carers and our students. There are many ways that you can get involved and I would like to see many more of you supporting the strategic direction of the Academy by joining our fabulous Parent Council, your contribution is vital to our further improvement. In addition to this, we need your daily support in ensuring that your child is: well equipped, properly dressed and fit for learning. Thank you to the vast majority of you who maintain really high standards, this means that we can keep our conversations focused on improving learning. Our Form Tutors are key people in your child’s education. Should you have any queries, concerns or just want to pass on information then please contact them and they will endeavour to get back to you within 24 hours. Can I also ask that you visit our website on a regular basis, amongst other things, we are developing the parent section to help you in supporting your child by giving you access to their records of attendance, behaviour and progress. You can also see information and reports of all the exciting activities and events that happen in the Academy that we would like to share with you. Whilst the Academy has improved significantly, there is always room for improvement. Consequently, I will be making a few changes to take us to the next level of our development. With each change, I have carried out a consultation process with students, staff and our Parent Council to ensure that we get a balanced view. This will be a key feature of my leadership and the way we continue to operate moving forward. Page 1 of 2
Moving Forward - The Academy day As you will undoubtedly be aware of by now, we are going to move to three two-hour lessons as opposed to two three-hour lessons. This will mean that sessions are shorter but we can revisit subjects during the week to reinforce learning. Enrichment will move to Tuesday and Thursday afternoons to enable students to focus more on their studies in the morning and early afternoon when they are more alert. Students will finish school at 3.20pm on a Friday, to allow for staff planning and training sessions. We will remove Mentoring and Guidance from this day to ensure that we have the same amount of learning time. Students may stay until 3.50pm, if we are informed by parents beforehand so that we can arrange supervision, please let your child’s form tutor know if this is the case. Apart from my own, there will be other changes to staffing that we will communicate through the website. However, I would like to inform you of a few changes to the current Executive team: Mrs Julie Jones will take on the new role of Director of Student Support Services; Mr Matthew Carpenter will take on the role Vice Principal, Director of Maths, Science and Technology and Mr Paul Taylor will take on the role of Assistant Director Post 16, leading our 6th Form. Mr Sharples and Mrs Carnie will be leaving to take up promoted posts elsewhere. Finally, Mrs Weale, who took over as Interim Principal, will continue to support me in the role of Executive Vice Principal next year. My thanks to her for the great job she has done and our best wishes go with the other two. I feel extremely privileged to be serving the community in and around the Academy. As the first generation of my family to go to University, I am fully aware of the challenges that our students face but also the massive opportunities that a good education and good family support can offer. I will make no apologies for wanting our students to look, act and perform to the best of their ability, as I know that you too, will only want the best for your child. Together we can do this.
