RTF Import Formatting Guidelines The RTF import wizard enables EMs to import all of item types (multiple choice, true/false, essay, fill-in-the-blank, and multiple answer) into the ExamSoft database. By saving your word document files as a .rtf (rich text format) file, the questions items can quickly and easily be imported. 1.

Formatting of imported items will be retained (i.e. bold). Supported Fonts: Arial, Arial Black, Comic Sans, Courier New, Georgia, Impact, Times New Roman, Trebuchet MS, Verdana Supported Sizes: 8pt, 9pt, 10pt, 11pt, 12pt, 14pt, 16pt, 20pt, 22pt, 24pt, 26pt, 28pt, 36p, 48pt, 72pt Special Characters are NOT supported such as quotes, commas, apostrophes, and asterisks.

Category import examples are included in the RTF Import Sample file for items #1-2. Be sure to remove these categories and items from your database if you choose to work with this sample file. Create a word document with all exam questions and answers in the following formats: 4.

Formatting items will be similar for each item type with a few variations that permits the system to distinguish between each one so they will display properly. For all item types the following rules apply:

Importing Instructions Numbering Items: (Required) When typing items, they must begin with a number followed by a period or parenthesis followed by a space.

Title: (Optional) A description can be imported with each item which makes it easier to identify after importing. At the beginning of the item, type the word ‘Title’ with a colon followed by a space. Then type the description content followed by another space.

Fill in the Blank Item Importing Within the import function, there can only be one answer to each question; however, for the Fill in the Blank Item import, there can be multiple versions of the correct answer. Correct answers can be identified in two ways. Type: F 6. Who was the president during WWII?

Instructor Rationale Importing Instructor’s Rationale can be shown or provided to exam takers in addition to other content post-examination. It can be shown or released with exam reviews or student results. It is different from the Internal Comments which are used for institutional purposes and management item banks.

Instructions Instructor Rationale After the item, use the tilde ‘~’ symbol to indicate the rationale statement to present to exam takers for the question despite the answer provided by the exam taker. It will immediately follow the item stem and proceed the answer choices. Item Comments After the answer, use the ‘@’ symbol to indicate the comment being attached to a specific answer choice. There must be at least one space before and after the ‘@’ symbol before adding the comments.

At this time, only one blank is supported for fill in the blank RTF importing. The blank will appear at the end of the question. It can be moved after importing by editing the item.
