Unique Ability

®

The Four Types Of Activities Unique Ability® Activities Unique Ability is what you love to do and do best. Unique Ability activities have four characteristics: 1. Superior skill: You have a great talent that other people notice and value. 2. Passion: You love doing it and want to do it as much as possible. 3. Energy: It’s energizing for you and others. 4. Never-ending improvement: You keep getting better, and never run out of possibilities for growth.

UNIQUE ABILITY

EXCELLENT COMPETENT

Excellent Activities These are the activities for which you have superior skill and a great reputation, but no passion. In some cases, you might not even enjoy these activities at all. It’s often harder to get out of doing these because you’re so good at them. Competent Activities These activities are the things at which you are merely adequate, only reaching minimum standards. A lot of people could do these activities better than you with a lot less effort. Incompetent Activities When you do these activities, you experience failure, frustration, stress, and conflict. You hate these activities because you’re not good at them. Do I have a Unique Ability? We each have a one-of-a-kind character that draws on and combines our innate talents, our personal passion, and our life experience. No one can duplicate this. Many people don’t see themselves as unique or special because being yourself comes so easily. But, if you think about it, by nature we’re all unique. Start by recognizing that you have a Unique Ability, and then pay attention to how and when you’re using it.

It’s the essence of what you love to do in ALL areas of your life — not just in business. It can be applied to many different situations, activities, and opportunities. It’s “factory installed.” You’ve been doing it since you were a child. It may not seem that exciting or special because it comes so naturally to you. Others may recognize it in you before you see it in yourself. It evolves throughout your life and keeps getting better the more you apply it.

The Experience

• What is the experience, either positive or negative, that you would like to improve and learn from? Like a director setting the scene for a play, briefly describe the key elements of the situation.

1

If you could do this experience over, knowing what you know now, what would you do differently? review everyone’s kolbe & strengthsfinder

(today’s date)

Briefly describe the experience you’d like to improve and learn from.

our leadership & teamwork

2

What’s working?

mentoring mary & john executive coaching

lack of trust between teams

connect outside of work

managing when we need to be leading

monthly team leader mtgs doing the moving future exercise

treat the leadership team as our main team

joe & tom collaborating

always talk through tough issues — no email be open — we don’t have to know everything, ask for help

jon being available for advice

4

be aware of how we’re coming across, 1 explain if needed find out the other person’s perspective — don’t assume do more outside events together, e.g., lunch include one another’s teams in our planning meetings

What Would You Do Differently?

• Write down all the things you would have done differently. Brainstorm alternatives, solutions, strategies, and resources needed for the improvements you would make.

Create a series of actions that would produce a much more strategic, successful, and satisfying experience in the future. review everyone’s talents, & play to everyone’s strengths & unique abilities

5

2

for key projects, make sure we include other teams to get the best possible input & result

6

be aware of what we’re projecting to others — our front stage — & be open to coaching

3

always handle tough issues 7 in person, not by email, & be open to a different perspective

when confronted w/ a different point of view, “listen to learn” rather than argue

keep our sense of humor — be able to 4 laugh at ourselves be open to coaching on how we’re coming across

• In every situation, there are things that worked and things that didn’t work. List these here.

What’s not? rugged individualism & not asking for help not aware of how we’re coming across to others don’t know everyone’s unique ability don’t always maximize our teams handling tough issues through email

give direction, then let our teams figure out what to do

What Worked/Didn’t Work?

ask for help when we’re concerned or overwhelmed = collective IQ

8

schedule monthly events out of the office — have fun together

recognize the difference between management & leadership, & know which “hat” to wear when

The New System

• What is the new system of action that would produce an even more fulfilling experience in the future? • From your list of possible solutions, distill the most effective steps and order them into a new system for action. This new system will prevent negative situations from happening again and enable you to replicate positive situations successfully.
