iving in a city known for elevated crime, poverty, and gangs, seven-year-old Destiny was no stranger to courage. But bravery took on an entirely different meaning for her as she fought a daily battle with multiple rare illnesses. Because Destiny was unable to attend school until first grade, she was nearly illiterate. She may have been small, but God had big plans to showcase her strength as a lighthouse of hope that would unlock the hearts of a community. The house next to Destiny’s had been a crack house for years until City Church moved in and transformed it into a place of worship and education. Through a partnership between Saddleback’s Good Neighbor Compton outreach and City Church, a homework club was set up on that property to improve academics in the community. Destiny and her brother Pepe went to the homework “Her physical club for tutoring, and when a volunteer discovered that Destiny did not scars ran deep — know how to read, she enlisted Pepe’s help. Within a few days, he taught his sister to read 24 words. but her strength Although Destiny’s family kept Christianity at arm’s length, it ran far deeper” didn’t stop her from attending Sunday services at City Church. As she grew in her faith, God began using her to encourage and inspire others. Destiny’s physical scars ran deep — but her strength ran far deeper. Her unshakable hope and contagious joy captured the hearts of everyone she met. Her spirit even impacted her family. One by one, they started attending church and, this past Easter, her oldest brother and dad were baptized. Destiny began to see changes in her oldest brother that only God could have made. He began reading the Bible, praying for their family, and much to her heart’s delight, started calling their mother “Mom” instead of her first name. Last Sunday, with her family and church around her to celebrate the moment, Destiny also was baptized. She says that she wants everyone to know that Jesus can change their lives — just like he did for her brother. Destiny may not realize it, but God is using her life as a compass for others. This extraordinary little girl’s strength and courage is effortlessly guiding people to the love and hope found in Christ.
