With all that has been happening in Japan the last few weeks I thought it might be helpful to know how the Church is responding. First, The Holy Father, through Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone S.D.B., has sent a telegram of condolence to Archbishop Leo Jun Ikenaga S.J. of Osaka, Japan, president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Japan, for the earthquake and tsunami which have brought devastation to the country. "Deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic effects of the major earthquake and consequent tsunamis which have struck Japan's north-eastern coastal regions, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI assures all who have been afflicted of his closeness at this difficult time. He prays for those who have died, and upon their grieving families and friends he invokes divine blessings of strength and consolation. The Holy Father also expresses his prayerful solidarity with all those providing rescue, relief and support to the victims of this disaster". As we know so well throughout the year we occasionally have a second collection that goes to assist one cause or another. One such collection, usually taken up in June, is the Annual Collection for Peter’s Pence. If you have ever wondered what exactly the monies collected from this collection are used for here is a good example. The Vatican Information service recently reported. At the weekend, Pope Benedict XVI sent a charitable donation of $100,000 U.S. dollars to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Japan to help victims of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck the Asian nation last Friday. Msgr. Anthony Figueiredo, an official at the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, the Vatican office responsible for papal donations to charities, told Vatican Radio’s Tracey McClure that they are working closely with the bishops, Caritas Internationalis and other aid organizations to determine how to respond to the greatest needs of Japan’s people. Calling it “a major tragedy,” Msgr. Figueiredo cited Japan as the latest in a string of major disasters, including the 2004 tsunami in Asia, a devastating earthquake and flooding in Pakistan and the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti a little more than a year ago. “The first thing we must do is really to pray… for these people to give them hope.” He said. “Obviously, material, concrete aid is necessary. The Holy Father has sent through this Pontifical Council the sum of one hundred thousand dollars to the (Japanese) Bishops’ Conference simply because this is the quickest way the funds can get to those dioceses most affected. Also the bishops are the first responsible for charity in the diocese and they know the needs of the people.”…“We are keeping a close monitor on the needs… Often there’s the immediate response which is good. The Holy Father himself asked for this immediate response. But then in time, the tragedy is often forgotten. This is what we experienced in Haiti… so the Church wants to be there not only in the short term but especially in the long term where many of the secular agencies have gone and there’s no one to help.” If you would like to make a personal donation the Diocese of San Diego is recommending that you do so through Catholic Relief Services at www.CRS.org or Mail your check or money order to: Catholic Relief Services, P.O. Box 17090 Baltimore, MD 21203-7090

Let us Pray

Please keep them in your prayers

Ruby A. Kathol & Logan L. Kathol,

Father, we come to you in the name of your Son Jesus Christ. We ask for your loving Mercy and kindness toward all who suffer as a result of the Earthquake, Tsunami and aftershocks which have devastated the people of Japan. Lord, for those who lost their lives, and those who mourn them, we ask for your loving mercy. Lord, for those who were wounded, we ask for healing and help. Lord, for those reaching out to the wounded, give them the supernatural graces, and the practical and economic resources they need in their efforts. Lord, for those who are searching for the dead, assist them in their effort so that all who lost their lives in this tragedy can be buried with dignity. We also pray also for those who were affected by this horrible disaster in Hawaii and those who are ministering to their needs. Father, may this natural disaster and true human tragedy become an invitation for your people to enter into the ongoing mission of reaching out to all of the poor and seeing in their face and in their need the face of your Son. During this Lent, we say "Yes" to your invitation to practice the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. May this human tragedy become for your people an occasion of grace and invitation to love. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord Amen
