I WILL ACHIEVE
MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL GUERRERO Dear SRES Families: Summer vacation is right around the corner and the number of days left with your children is getting smaller and smaller. Students are excited with the thought of progressing to the next grade level as teachers prepare for summer: school, learning, or travel. It is an exciting time as staff at SRES prepare to end the school year in the best interest of our students. Summer school will be held for students in Kindergarten through sixth grade from June 5th – June 29th. It will be held Monday – Thursday except for the week of June 12th in which Wednesday, June 14th is a holiday. On this week it will be held Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Applications are currently being accepted. First Things First will also be holding summer classes for students entering Kindergarten at any school next year. Stop by the front office for more information or leave a message at 480-362-2400 for Mrs. Cheyenne Enos. Finally, Kindergarten Jump Start will be held for all Kindergarten students enrolled to attend Salt River Elementary next year. It will be held from July 17 – 28th and will serve to introduce incoming Kindergarten students to school schedule, routines, and procedures. More information will be sent to students already enrolled. If your child will turn 5 years old before September 1st, stop by the front office to enroll him/her. We’d love for all Community students to attend their home school. We look forward to meeting them! Call the school at 480 362 2400 for more information. Dr. Guerrero/Principal
Kindergarten children are confident in spirit, infinite in resources, and eager to learn. Everything is still possible.” – Robert Fulghum
From Librarian Yurek The last day for students to check out library books is Friday, May 5th. All library books will be due back to the library by Friday, May 12. Please check bookshelves, bedrooms, and old backpacks at home for any books that need to be returned. Books hide in plain sight on bookshelves. If there is a Salt River Elementary Library barcode on the book, please return it. It could be the very book for which a student has been searching, and we have a few still missing! About the 2017 Law Day Theme The 14th Amendment: Transforming American Democracy The 2017 theme provides the opportunity to explore the many ways that the Fourteenth Amendment has reshaped American law and society. Through its Citizenship, Due Process and Equal Protection clauses, this transformative amendment advanced the rights of all Americans. It also played a pivotal role in extending the reach of the Bill of Rights to the states. Ratified during Reconstruction a century and a half ago, the Fourteenth Amendment serves as the cornerstone of landmark civil rights legislation, the foundation for numerous federal court decisions protecting fundamental rights, and a source of inspiration for all those who advocate for equal justice under law.
FROM THE NURSE
The tooth doctor will be here at SRES on May, 2nd and May 4th. Nurse Biehl will be pulling students from their classrooms to visit the dentist on these days. If you have any questions or would like for your child to participate, please contact the nurse at 480 363 2400.
May – National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month! Allergic disease is the leading cause of missed school days for children. It’s now peak season for allergy and asthma sufferers, and a perfect time to recognize the causes of asthma and allergies to best prevent and treat attacks. Make sure your child’s teachers and coaches are aware of your child’s asthma so they can provide the necessary help. If you suffer from allergies, you know the symptoms: coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose, and scratchy throat. Common allergens and irritants found in and around the home are pollen, dust mites, mold, insect droppings, pet dander, and secondhand smoke. Exposure to these allergens can even bring about a serious asthma attack. During an Asthma attack, airways become narrowed and breathing can become extremely difficult. Other asthma triggers include: respiratory infections, pollen (trees, grasses, weeds) air pollution, food, allergies, cleaning products, perfumes, exercise, and cold air exposure. Common asthma symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. Asthma cannot be cured but it can be controlled.
Do Your “HOME work” – Clear your home of allergy/asthma triggers – choose not to smoke- keep bed linens clean –keep pets out of the bedrooms – clean up the mold and get rid of excess moisture – fix leaky plumbing –limit use of pesticide sprays. Dust and vacuum regularly, and use air conditioning when possible
