Sam Houston has had a pair of individuals thrust into the national spotlight in the first six weeks of 2016. Both quarterback Jeremiah Briscoe and defensive end P.J. Hall have earned national player of the week honors, most recently being Briscoe after his 438-yard, 7-touchdown performance vs Stephen F. Austin on Oct. 1. That effort earned him not only Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors, but also national player of the week honors from STATS FCS and CFPA. Meanwhile, Hall was named both the Southland Conference and STATS FCS National Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 19 after his performance at Lamar. The junior recorded nine tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss while the Bearkats clamped down the potent Lamar offense in a 44-31 win. Hall has since raised his school record for tackles for loss to 54. The Seguin product also applied the pressure in the end zone on quarterback Andrew Allen that resulted in an intentional grounding call for a safety.

KATS CAPTURE 500TH PROGRAM WIN

The Bearkats picked up the program’s 500th all-time win on Sept. 17 at Lamar, with the program now standing at 503-460-36 all-time entering Saturday against Abilene Christian. The Bearkats also captured their 200th NCAA Division I victory in its win at UIW and will play their 1,000th game in team history against Abilene Christian on Saturday.

KEELER REACHES 200-WIN PLATEAU

Head coach K.C. Keeler captured his 200th career victory on Oct. 1 against SFA. The third-year Sam Houston head man is 201-86-1 and is in his 23rd year of coaching. Only 75 other coaches have ever reached the milestone and just 14 are currently active coaches. He has put up 12 10-win seasons entering 2016 and with five more wins this Bearkat squad would give him his 13th season of reaching double-digit wins. He is the ninth-fastest coach to reach the 200-win mark in the history of college football, and also the 12th youngest to reach the plateau.

OVERWHELMING SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE FAVORITES

The Bearkats, coming off an 11-4 season and a run to the national semifinals, were picked as the favorite in the Southland Conference as voted on by the league’s coaches and sports information directors. Sam Houston received eight first-place votes and 99 points total in the coaches poll as well as 99 points in the SID poll. The Bearkats led all conference institutions with 14 preseason allconference selections, including seven first-team honorees.

HALL, AVERY NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA

Sam Houston State defensive end P.J. Hall and running back Corey Avery were tabbed as STATS FCS First-Team Preseason All-America and Third-Team Preseason All-America respectively, the publication announced before the season. Hall is a two-time All-Southland first teamer and is the program’s all-time leader in tackles for loss (54 for 205 yards) and is second all-time at SHSU in career sacks (23). Avery rushed for 1,483 yards a year ago, the third highest single season total in program history, doing so on just 194 touches. The Dallas native currently leads SHSU with 476 yards, an average of 118.2 yards per game, on the ground and eight touchdowns.

LOOKING FOR THE ‘LAST 10 PERCENT’ IN 2016

Sam Houston State head coach K.C. Keeler believes his program has what it takes to win the national championship this season. In fact, the third-year man believes his program is just 10 percent away from the program’s first national title. The Bearkats advanced to the NCAA Division I Championship game in 2011 and 2012, falling both times to five-time defending champion North Dakota State. Sam Houston is one of only three FCS teams to earn NCAA playoff berths each of the last five seasons and is only one of eight football programs to appear in consecutive NCAA Division I Football Championship games in the event’s 36-year history. In total, 11 of Sam Houston’s 16 post-season victories have come over Top-10 ranked opponents. The Kats defeated five Top 10 opponents to reach the FCS semifinals in 2014 and 2015.

NEW FIELD TURF GRACES BOWERS STADIUM

After receiving a brand new scoreboard before the start of the 2015 football season, the Bearkats ran out onto a brand new turf field when they began the 2016 season against Oklahoma Panhandle State on Sept. 3. The replacement of Bowers Stadium’s old surface, which was installed in 2007 includes a new AstroTurf 3D3-60 field, the same turf installed at Don Sanders Stadium last fall. It features inlaid letters “Sam Houston” and “Bearkats” in the end zones and inlaid Southland Conference logos and Sam Houston paw print logos on the field, as well as colored end zones and field border.

Overall, 50 Sam Houston football players have been selected to 119 FCS All-America squads since 1986. The Bearkats won the 2014 NCAA Women’s Bowling national championship. The Kat football team played in the National Championship Game in both 2012 and 2013.

WHY THE K?

Bearkats is spelled with a K to denote a creature that is more mythical than real. The name came from a popular local saying from the 1920s “tough as a Bearkat!” Sam Houston’s teams have been nicknamed Bearkats since 1923. Prior to that the sports teams were called “The Normals” since the Sam Houston was then a teachers’ school.
