The Voices Of Colour Sports Series is a tribute to AfricanAmerican athletes who used their athleticism and growing influence to help create social change. And for their invaluable contributions in helping to make a better America, it is this author's hope that their stories will inspire you to make a difference in the lives of others.

Gail Devers RUNNING AGAINST THE ODDS At the age of 40, when most, if not all of her contemporaries had long since retired, Gail Devers was still competing at a world class level. Come to think of it, that's not that big of a surprise, considering Devers has always been at her best when the odds have been stacked against her.
And now, thanks to the editors of Slam Dunk! Publishing Books, you can join THE VOICES OF COLOUR SPORTS SERIES on a poetic and biographical journey of a three-time Olympic gold medalist largely recognized as the greatest sprinterhurdler of her generation--if not for all time. Right out of the starter's block we'll revisit the storied campus of UCLA, where the 1988 Pac-10 Athlete of the Year is in hot pursuit of her OLYMPIC DREAMS. But those dreams would soon be placed on hold when she is stricken with Graves Disease, a chronic thyroid disorder that not only grounds the high flying Devers, but at its most critical stage, leaves her just days away from having her feet amputated.
Gail Devers RUNNING AGAINST THE WIND Amazingly, less than two years after her diagnosis, Devers engineered one of THE GREATEST COMEBACK stories of the twentieth century by claiming gold in the 100-meter dash during the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona, thus earning her the coveted title of THE WORLD'S FASTEST WOMAN.
Now retired, Devers relishes in the title of wife and mother. In between, she also serves as a much needed role model for a new millennial of track and field hopefuls. To some skeptics there remains a void in her decades long career for not having won Olympic gold in her signature event, the 100-meter hurdles. But considering all that she's had to overcome... she's won so much more.

After a series of frustrating losses, her RUNNER'S FATE surfaces when she finally beats her older brother PARENTHESIS in a little "school yard" racing. This turn of events would not only inspire Devers, but would signal the start of her OLYMPIC DREAMS.
