San Bernardino Valley College - Horizon One

After completing the San Bernardino Valley College Landscape Master Plan with Steinberg Architects, SWA LA was asked to join HGA in the first phase of its implementation. Horizon One marks the construction of five buildings – Chemistry and Physical Sciences, North Hall, Media and Communications, and two maintenance buildings – that are to replace the buildings demolished to comply with FEMA’s seismic life-safety standards. With one of most active fault systems in southern California running diagonally through the heart of the campus, the project presented a unique design opportunity. The process aimed to negotiate rigid budget constraints without compromising the integrity of the master plan and ultimately compelled SWA LA to present two schemes for each of the three academic buildings – one mindful of the budget and another that prioritizes the aspirations of the master plan.
