It is so difficult to believe we have completed two grading periods of the 16-17 school year. It’s even more difficult to believe we will soon be flipping the calendar to November. Once we make that momentous step, visions of Turkey and Holiday festivities are just around the corner. I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate our SDHS Vaquero band for scoring straight 1s in the marching competition held in Falfurrias on October 22nd. Also the Cross Country team advanced at the district meet and will be competing in the Regional competition on October 29th at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Even more good news involves our Volleyball team which has advanced out of district play for the first time since 1999. In case you are bad with numbers some of the varsity players weren’t even born in 1999, so this is a big deal. Congratulations to all of our student participants, we wish them the best of luck in future competitions. - Mrs. Garcia

The San Diego Vaquero Varsity Band performed on October 15 at the Crossroads Marching Festival in Robstown and received the superior rating of a 1. The band placed 4th overall. On October 22, the band traveled to Falfurrias to perform at the Region XIV UIL 2A/3A/4A Marching Contest. There the band received a superior rating of straight 1’s. This is the first time our Vaquero Band has received straight 1’s in over three years. Congratulations to all band members and everyone involved. By: Shelsy Lopez

The students who had the privilege to take a trip to Washington were Katarina Thompson and Destiny Leal. They are apart of a program called Talent Search. The program was in search of interested students who were looking to explore a variety of schools Washington had to offer. The program opened their minds to the endless opportunities that may come after high school. By: Kristen Trevino

First of all, we would like to welcome Jana and Ashley to SDHS! As I sat down and interviewed Jana (who is from Germany) first, I asked how she likes SDHS. She said, “I like SDHS very much, the students and staff here are very nice”. She’s proud to now call herself a Vaquero! Like every curious student that goes here, I also asked how different SDHS is from the school in Germany. She said, “It’s very different from Germany. The school in Germany that I went to, we stayed in one room all day, and all year. Only the teachers would exchange classrooms. We also didn’t have as many exams as SDHS does, but I like it very much.” She also said, “I miss my friends and family over there.” By: Jasmine Santos I interviewed Ashley and she is from a small country named Thailand. First off, I asked how she likes it here in SDHS and she responded with, “I like it here, it’s just harder to adapt to because of my English.” Another question I asked was how is this school different than the one you went to? She said, “Here there is more walking, in my school we just changed teachers to learn different subjects and our classes were bigger… about 50+.” I also asked how Texas differed from Thailand and what it was like over there, she said, “The weather is closely related because it’s just as hot, the language is different because we use Thai here you mainly speak English, and school starts at 8:30 AM and ends at 5:00 PM.” I asked what her true name was and what she misses most from home, she said her true Thailand name is Suthira Sirijaruphan and what she misses most is her family, friends, and the food. The last question I asked was how does the foreign exchange student program work? She said, “I asked to come to America because my school was too strict and I wanted to see what it was like here. I started learning English in 7th grade so it was a bit easier for me to study American 2 things.” By: Leslie Gonzalez

Cross Country- On Wednesday, October 19, 2016, San Diego High School hosted the district cross country meet. Both the Lady Vaqueros and Vaqueros hard work and determination led to both teams placing 3rd. The Vaqueros are now headed to regionals which will be hosted in Corpus Christi on October 26, 2016. Good luck runners! Go Vaqueros! By: Lorena Vera, Hannah Rodriguez, Alexandria Hernandez

Volleyball- The Lady Vaquer os have been working harder than ever since the beginning of July. From summer camps to summer leagues they did it all to reach a goal this season, which is to make playoffs that hasn’t been done since 1999. The Lady Vaqueros finished 2nd in district play earning them a spot in playoffs. Come out and support our Lady Vaqueros as they try to make school history! By: Alexia Cadena
