• About Sand volleyball is in its third season as an NCAA Emerging Sport. An emerging sport is a sport recognized by the NCAA that is intended to provide additional athletics opportunities to female student-athletes. In the years since the emerging-sports list was created, four have earned full-fledged championships status. As more schools continue to add sand volleyball programs, the NCAA is expected to consider adding the sport to its national championship programming. While an emerging sport, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) is responsible for holding a national championship event. The Dons added sand volleyball to the competitive slate last season, bringing the total number of athletics teams to 15 sports, eight for women and seven for men.
