COFFEE INFORMATION

THE SMALL CENTRAL AMERICAN COUNTRY OF HONDURAS HAS FACED A NUMBER OF CHALLENGES EMERGING INTO THE SPECIALITY MARKET AND COMPETING WITH NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES. Beneficio San Vicente has played a key role in developing and promoting high end coffees from Honduras. Although there are other regions such as Marcala that have been famous for many years, Beneficio San Vicente has managed to produce coffees that compete with some of the top end coffees coming out of Central America. BSV is located in Santa Barbara and is about an hour and half drive from the industrial capitol San Pedro Sula. It is also in proximity to Lago

Yojoa, in fact many of the contributing farms face this famous lake. San Vicente came out to the high end speciality scene approximately 8 years ago via Cup of Excellence. The centralised mill plays the role of assisting growers to export their coffees by offering technical assistance and financing. The local farmers pulp their coffee at the farmgate and generally dry on their own patios or raised beds. If the weather does not permit, the farmers can also deliver to the beneficio “wet” so that the mechanical dryers can do the work. Like many other coffee producing countries, 90% of Honduran coffee farmers are small holders. They produce Pacas, Caturra, Bourbon as well as some local hybrids.
