Sancton Hill Wind Farm

An open day at Goonhilly Wind Farm in Cornwall

This newsletter is designed to keep our neighbours informed about the project to build a wind farm at Sancton Hill. Earlier this year East Riding of Yorkshire Council granted planning permission for five wind turbines measuring up to 100m to the tip of the blade.

first green electricity around the middle of 2012. Before building work even begins, the first payment will be made into a Community Fund which will be available to support local good causes throughout the wind farm’s working life.

We expect to start construction work over the coming winter, with the wind farm generating its

REG Windpower will donate almost £1M over the wind farm’s expected 25-year lifetime to help fund worthwhile projects in our host and neighbouring parishes. The fund has been established to cover good causes within a three mile radius of Sancton Hill. To get the ball rolling and enable speedy support for local schemes, £70,000 is now available for applications from local groups in Sancton and Newbald. Once the wind farm is up and running, we will pay £35,000 into the fund every year of its operating life and groups within a three mile radius of the wind farm can apply. We are delighted that representatives of Sancton and Newbald parishes will sit on a panel to determine the most deserving projects for funding. They will be supported by officers from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

Construction Site Information

Turbine erection at Goonhilly Wind Farm in Cornwall

Building a wind farm of this size takes around six months. We expect to start this autumn by building a small brick substation. This will be approximately the size of a double garage, and will house the site control room, electrical switching and meters. The next stage will be to upgrade access tracks around the wind farm site. These are not only used during the building phase, but also by engineers maintaining the turbines throughout the wind farm’s working life and again when the site is decommissioned. Once foundations are laid and underground cables installed, we can erect the turbines. Each of the five turbines can be erected in a matter of days. After they have been connected to the local electricity network

and fully tested, the wind farm becomes operational and starts supplying clean, green energy. We will also carry out a range of environmental improvements to the site and its surrounds. This will include new footpath routes to connect to the existing network and these will be laid out while the wind farm is being built. A Community Liaison Panel will meet regularly through the construction phase to help ensure that any disruption is minimised. Local representatives on this panel will include Graham Ward, Sancton Parish Council chairman and Gavin Steward from Newbald Parish Council.
