SAPSASA- Primary School Sport Edition 26 Term 1, 2014 1. Recognition
THE FIRST QUARTER Fortunately the annual SAPSASA program does not get into top gear until some weeks into the term. This allows for schools and districts to get their sports programs up and running. The three events conducted in term 1 were the District Convenors Conference, the Swimming Championships and the Softball State Carnival. All were very successful events.
2. Intrastate Sports Term 2 is the peak school sport time with carnivals in Australian football, netball, hockey and football (soccer) plus the Cross Country Championships. Despite communicating well in advance the change to cross country some schools are only just becoming aware of the implications. Nearly all SAPSASA Districts will offer a cross country event for participation and in a major change the primary section of the championship at Oakbank will be for district representative teams rather than school entry. Several reasons including student safety have resulted in this change. Thank you to all SAPSASA supporters for their on-going commitment to the school sport program.
CONGRATULATIONS TO NEW LIFE MEMBER ANNA WALPOLE In a surprise presentation Anna was presented with her Life Member badge at the Softball Carnival pre-event meeting. Colleagues from the Lower Eyre Peninsula SAPSASA District had nominated Anna for this award. Anna has been a SAPSASA supporter for over 25 years. During that time she has undertaken many roles including being a parent, team manager or coach, District Convenor, Primary Operations Committee member, a co-convenor for the SSA Hockey championships and now a grand-parent. It is in the sports of softball, hockey and athletics that Anna is best known however she has extensive involvement with a wide range of sports. She is highly regarded for her enthusiasm and her encouragement for all students in school sport. As noted by Graham McConnell in Anna’s citation, “Anna has worked beyond the call of duty to encourage participation and to oversee involvement and selection in many of the SAPSASA sports available to students.” Congratulations to Anna on her well earned award.

The program each day is quite full so one change has been flagged for 2015 and that is to utilise 10 lanes in the heats. Thanks to both Wirreanda HS and Windsor Gardens VC who provided students time-keepers. Both groups did an excellent job. SAPSASA was well supported by Swimming SA officials who provided the technical support once again.

SOFTBALL STATE CARNIVAL The softball teams enjoyed excellent conditions during their five day carnival. The weather was ideal and the venue was set up well by Adelaide Shores staff, James Harris from Softball SA and Chris Gent the SAPSASA Softball Convenor. An almost perfect draw of 10 teams in each of 3 girls’ divisions and 1 boys’ division was planned however late changes resulted in a bye in Division 2. All other divisions played 2 games each day with one game on the final day. Teams competed in good spirit and officials appropriately managed their umpiring commitments. Thanks to Chris Gent and all team officials for their work during the carnival. DIVISION 1 GIRLS 1st City South
