Sassafras Creek Organic Farm Hiring for the 2017 Farm Season Farmer’s Market Assistant What we do Sassafras Creek Farm is a certified-organic market vegetable farm in Southern Maryland, located 45 miles south of Washington, D.C., between the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay. We are a husband and wife team growing 80 varieties of vegetables, fruit, herbs and grains and are dedicated to producing exceptionally delicious, healthy food for our community. The farm has 46 tillable acres, with 4.0 acres in vegetable production, several acres in grains, three high-tunnels, a propagation greenhouse and a washing and packing barn. The balance of tillable acreage is planted in year-round cover crops and pollinator habitat. We use tractors and scale appropriate equipment to help increase production efficiency to include: cultivation, seeding, no-till planting, vacuum seeding, plastic mulch-laying/removal, water wheel transplanting, foliar feeding, flail mowing, spading tillage; etc. Our produce is sold at a local farmer’s market, a natural food store, farm-to-table restaurants, a local farm stand and regional organic grocery store. We grow and sell year-round. The farm was established in 2011 and is veteran-owned and operated. What we need from you – Position Description The Farmer’s Market Assistant is a part-time position and works alongside the farmer and other employees to: -
Sell produce during the farmer’s market season Assist customers in selecting vegetables Educating customers on how to store and prepare vegetables Help set-up and take-down of the farmer’s market stand Restock market displays during the market
Market Season Starts: mid-April Market Season Ends: late-November App Deadline: Open
Day/Hours: Saturday, 7:30 am – 2:00 pm. Prefer you work at least two Saturday’s per month. Market Location: California Farmer’s Market (at the BAE parking lot located on Rt 235, across from Walmart in California, MD) Qualifications Providing excellent customer service is a priority. We give preference to applicants with: Prior retail experience, and good customer service skills, experience working in a fast-paced team environment, knowledge of cooking with fresh (local) vegetables, ability to lift 40-lbs, a positive can-do attitude and sense of humor. Ability to work quickly and cheerfully is preferred. What we will do for you We take great pride in growing superb vegetables and we will teach you everything we know about selling and operating a successful farmer’s market stand. You would be paid weekly. New employees start at $10/hour. We will consider higher wages depending on your experience and/or demonstrated skills/abilities. You would have access to free and discounted organic produce, fruit, herbs, and grains for your own use.
