Church Family Spotlight

Ron & Joyce Dressler

J

oyce was born in Fort Wayne, IN, while Ron entered the world in Toledo, Ohio. Both are long-term members of WPBC, serving here since March of 1992. They will celebrate 50 years of marriage November 12! Statistically, only five percent of all married couples enjoy this milestone. Congratulations! They have a son, Marc age 44, who lives in McKinney, Texas with his wife and two sons. Daughter Paige, 40, lives in Clovis with her husband and two daughters. Joyce’s first job was baby-sitting for the neighborhood kids. She also sold root beer at the Blue-Moon Drive-In. “No, I didn’t wear roller skates!” Afterward, she worked in an office doing data entry. “Not very exciting!” she said. The couple met in the summer of 1965 at a party Joyce’s friends were giving in the apartment building where Ron lived. At the time, Joyce worked for Lincoln Life Insurance, and also at a restaurant. “So of course, I started eating at that restaurant and we soon started dating!” said Ron with a big grin. The happy pair dated for a little over a year, and then married at Shoaff Park Baptist Church on Nov. 12, 1966, the very church Joyce first attended as a child. When Joyce was 8, she recalls a preacher and his wife knocking

on their door and speaking to her parents, who were unchurched. The couple introduced themselves as Reverend and Mrs. Cook, from Scotland. “They invited us to come to church, even though they were meeting in homes,” recalls Joyce. In time, the church people raised enough money to buy land, and soon, Shoaff Park Baptist Church was built. “When I was 10, I was one of the first people baptized in the new building,” said Joyce. Joyce’s two sisters, Ro and Sheila who are both strong Christians have always been there for her. “We went through some rough times as children, and God was always there helping us. We are our own support groups.” Meanwhile, Ron was not raised in a Christian home, but he found he enjoyed working and earning money. At age 13 or 14, Ron had a newspaper route, worked in a grocery store and also mowed lawns. But his first “real” job was in a stamping plant that produced auto parts for Ford Motor Company. “I think the only time my parents and I were in church was the night Joyce and I married,” he said. After marrying, the couple attended church occasionally, as Ron believed he was doing “just fine without Jesus.” His attitude toward God began to soften around the time their son, Marc, was born. “Joyce was a believer [in Christ] and slowly led me to the Lord.” Ron was baptized on June 29, 1980 in Dublin, Ohio. In the fall of 1981, the family moved from Dublin to Salinas, CA. At that time, Joyce was torn about leaving the Midwest and was afraid. A friend gave her a little plaque that said, “Bloom where you are planted!” “That little saying from my Christian friend helped me to realize that wherever I go, God is always with me,” said Joyce. In the fall of 1991, the Dresslers moved from Waco, Texas to Fresno. See

Dressler, from page 1

WPBC’s location was convenient to their home and so they visited one Sunday. Then-Pastor Ed Huffman invited the Dresslers over for Thanksgiving, along with other people. “The turkey was good and we made some friends. So that started our relationship with WPBC and we joined shortly thereafter,” said Ron. Although now retired, Ron’s had a great career in construction, working in management for general contractors and metal building contractors and manufacturers, covering the entire western U.S. “I’ve designed around 1,500 projects, including WPBC’s main worship center,” said Ron proudly. “Working has been my hobby. I am a pretty good handyman, and there’s always something to do [around the house].” Earlier in life, Ron admits moving around the country “chasing greener grass” changing jobs and even getting fired. But he is quick to say God’s always answered and provided for him and his family. “God is great!” said Ron. Many people say how their lives have changed dramatically after meeting Jesus. “I can’t say that happened to me, but I know Jesus has been watching over me,” confessed Ron. When he was 19, Ron and a buddy would often drive 30 minutes northeast to Detroit, Michigan. Why? To street race his pal’s 1960 Corvette, of course! One night, the boys were street racing at around 100 mph. The car suddenly spun out of control and skidded to a stop a mere ten feet from several trees. “I guess even then, Jesus was watching over us,” said Ron. Ron admits to being a successmotivation junkie.

“If there was a new book or tape, I bought it,” he said. Ron has met Earl Nightingale, Zig Ziglar, Paul Meyer and many others. Fun facts: The Dresslers have been to about 50 percent of the NFL stadiums, visited all 50 states, been on four cruises, and have been to most Presidential Libraries and National Parks. The couple has been privileged to visit Panama, Ireland, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica and Columbia. “We have really enjoyed our travel journeys!” Meanwhile, the couple’s spiritual journey is on-going. The Dresslers have been enrolled in Mike McCullough’s Sunday morning Life Group for about six years. “He’s a great teacher and the friendships that have been formed in that class and others, are a very important part of our lives,” said Ron. One of Joyce’s secret desires was to be a detective or write detective stories. These days, Joyce is a greeter in the children’s building on Sunday mornings, while Ron is on the Building Committee and also serves as a lead usher. Joyce also volunteers with several other ladies on Wednesday afternoons facilitating Good News Club at Maple Creek Elementary school. “This is my sixth year!” she said proudly. Joyce loves to read and spend quality time with her grandchildren. “Joyce is the most important person in my life, on this earth. She is great and I love her,” said Ron. “Ron is my best friend, and he keeps me laughing. I love you, Ron!” The couple would like to express their thanks for being a caring church and pray for God to continue to bless Woodward Park Baptist Church.
