Saturday, January 14 vs. Moose Jaw Warriors EASTERN PROMISE: The Royals have enjoyed success this season when they play against Eastern Conference opponents. So far this year, Victoria has collected an 8-2-0-0 record that includes a mark of 6-1-0-0 on home ice. The Royals’ powerplay has also gone 15/53=28.3% in those 10 games. Matthew Phillips leads Victoria with 10 goals against Eastern Conference teams, while Jack Walker has the second most markers at nine. SOPHOMORE SENSATIONS: Tonight’s match features both the Western Conference Rookie of the Year and the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Year from last season. Victoria’s Matthew Phillips was the winner of the WHL Rookie of the Year award as he tallied 76 points (37g-39a) in 72 contests, which set the new Royals’ record for most points by a first-year player. Moose Jaw’s Noah Gregor earned Rookie of the Year honors in the Eastern Conference after he recorded 73 points (28g-45a) last season. SWITCHING SIDES: In tonight’s match-up Victoria Royals’ forward Blake Bargar will be playing in his first game against his former club. Bargar was acquired by the Royals from the Warriors in the 2016 off-season for a conditional eighth round pick in 2018. The native of Torrance, CA played 119 games with the Warriors over two seasons (2014-16) and notched eight points (2g-6a) to go along with 73 penalty minutes. ROOKIE NETMINDER: Royals’ netminder Dean McNabb made his first WHL appearance in last night’s contest against the Kelowna Rockets. So far this year, the Regina, SK product has earned a 13-2-0-0 record to go with a 1.86 goals against average (GAA) and a .909 save percentage (SV%) for the Regina Pat Canadians of Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League (SMHL). HOCKEY CANADA CONNECTION: Victoria forward Tyler Soy, defenceman Chaz Reddekopp and Moose Jaw goaltender Zachary Sawchenko were all teammates on the Team Pacific team that finished second at the 201314 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. In six games, Soy finished with five points (2g-3a), Reddekopp registered two points (0g-2a) while Sawchenko finished with a 4-1-0-0 record to coincide with a 0.929 SV% and a 2.40 GAA. Soy and Sawchenko would lace up as teammates again when they both represented Canada at the 2014 IIHF Under-18 World Championships in Finland. Canada finished with a bronze medal as Soy collected two assists in four games while Sawchenko earned with a 4-0-0-0 record and posted a 0.907 SV% and a 2.25 GAA. PROSPECT REPORT: Royals’ prospect Tarun Fizer is currently fifth in scoring in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League (AMHL). Fizer leads all players on the UFA Bisons Midget AAA with 30 points (13g-17a) in 25 games, which is also the best mark of all 2001-born skaters in the league. The Chestermere, AB native was th selected in the fourth round, 69 overall, by Victoria in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft before he signed a contract with the club in August.
