Evaluation Timelines:

Preschool Evaluations 

If determined that an educational evaluation is appropriate, according to developmental milestones, concerns, and suspected eligibility categories, your child might be evaluated in one or more areas: 

speech/language skills  social and motor skills  cognitive skills  preschool readiness skills

Before The Evaluation: Our Preschool Coordinator will contact you to obtain consent, schedule the evaluation, and complete paperwork. Parent input is an important component of the evaluation; parents will be asked to complete a Social Development History and may be asked to complete checklists and rating scales. During the evaluation: Your child will be evaluated at Sawmill Woods preschool. The evaluation team may consist of:   

Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP)  School Psychologist Occupational Therapist & Physical Therapist Early Childhood Special Education Teacher  Preschool Coordinator

The exact areas to be evaluated and personnel is dependent upon your child's unique needs.

If your child is transitioning from First Steps, the evaluation and results will be reviewed by his/her 3rd birthday.

 If your child is three years old (or older), by law, the school has 50 school days to complete the evaluation and review results.

Upon completing the evaluation, a case conference will be scheduled - evaluators, school representatives, and parents will participate to review findings and determine if the child meets criteria for special education services. If eligible for special services, an Individual Education Program (IEP) will be developed to address your child’s needs, through special education. Children Ages 3 to 5: Call your pediatrician or Sawmill Woods Preschool to speak with someone about your concerns, and to determine if a referral for an evaluation is appropriate, based on eligibility categories and development. Speech Development: If you are only concerned about your child's sound production (articulation) or language skills, call Sawmill Woods Preschool to discuss your concerns, and to determine if a referral for a speech and/or language referral is appropriate. Eligibility Criteria In Indiana, to receive preschool special education services, your child must be eligible for one or more of the following categories, as listed on page 3.

Eligibility categories in the state of Indiana include: Autism Spectrum Disorder A developmental disability in communication, learning, social interaction & unusual patterns of behavior &/or play. Cognitive Disability Significantly below average general intellectual functioning-may be mild to severe in nature Blind or low vision Visual impairments that severely affect development and learning. Deaf or Hard of Hearing Hearing loss that, with or without amplification, affects development and learning; a recent audiogram is required. Deaf –Blind Hearing and visual impairments that severely affect development and learning Developmental Delay (ages 3-5) A significant delay in one or more areas or moderate delays in two areas including cognitive, language, physical, social and/or self-help skills. Emotional Disability A severe, lengthy emotional condition which interferes with development and learning. Language Impairment A delay or disorder of receptive language (understanding spoken messages) , expressive language, (using words and sentences to communicate), or pragmatic language (using language socially) that impacts learning.

Speech Impairment A delay or disorder of speech sound production (clarity) , fluency ( rate of speech) or voice (pitch, volume, or quality) that impacts learning. Orthopedic Impairment A physical impairment affecting motor development and learning Other Health Impairment Limited Strength, vitality or alertness due to chronic or acute health problems which affect learning

Traumatic Brain Injury An acquired injury to the brain resulting in total or partial functional disability that affects educational performance.
